I want to thank you all for creating and contributing to this list during the invitation phase of the process. This kind of collegial info sharing is the best of what SDN has to offer and I appreciate people's respectful tone with each other and the group's strategy of reposting the complete list every time with whatever additions. I don't take this sort of thing for granted so thank you and I look forward to meeting everyone on the interview trail where I imagine we'll have similar positive and supportive conversations. I hope everyone finds a good situation that fits them well.

Anyone else out there still looking for their first interview invite ? I am a transfer resident and I'm getting rather despondent that I haven't had any interview invites yet. I'd like to think that I'm a competitive candidate since I scored very high on the RISE.

Has anyone heard from ucsd?

I haven't heard back from UCSD either. I'm assuming they've done their round 1 by now... Seems like they'd be at a disadvantage getting on our calendars if not.

Same thing with Loma Linda, Colorado, and Arizona ---- and Columbia... actually on second thought maybe I'm wrong if there are that many programs that nobody has heard from. Sure seems late though if they want to get on our calendars.

Heard from UCSD today. But you're right about it getting harder to adjust our calendars at this point. Even if we're willing to free up certain dates, there's no guarantee it will match up with the dates they are offering. Then again, it could be a way for them to attract applicants who value their program most up front.

how is everyone's interview season going?

Overall really well! I've been pleasantly surprised by a few interviews at places I didn't think I would like; but changed my mind after meeting the faculty/residents etc. I am ready to be done with the interviewing. Thanksgiving will give me a nice break. Hope everyone else is having a good time as well.

anyone mind sharing places they really liked/disliked?

Are invites still going out? Have had a lull, but still not at goal for number of interviews. Should I be freaking out and thinking the end is near?!?! lol.

Maybe they'll be some? Not sure how much you can count on that though. I recently cancelled one this week and met a few other applicants this week who said they had a lot and might be cancelling. There's 1 other interview I considered canceling but my flight is not refundable.

I really liked Iowa City, Johns Hopkins and Vanderbilt in Nashville. Still haven't interviewed at WASHU and UTsouthwestern in Dallas. Very anxious to wrap it all up. My wife says based on my feedback that I didn't like UPenn ; but how can that be, they are a top-tier school? I think she is delusional. Ha, ha.

So far I've loved Penn, NYU, UNC, Drexel and Maryland (in no particular order)

The interview trail has been a lot of fun--interviewing at each program has been an opportunity to learn a different practice structure, to talk to different respective discipline leaders, and to generally gather different perspectives. Visiting new cities is always fun too; ensuring that you have an extra evening or afternoon at each new place makes the trip a little more human. It really helps that anywhere from 50-70% of the programs I have visited have provided accommodations; that greatly reduces the threshold needed to justify a visit.

In general, interviews have been extremely low-stress. Only about half of the time will I even be asked real interview questions (vs "how is your day / what questions do you have") and even those tend to be softballs. Maybe 10% of interviewers have given me hard questions (hypotheticals, examples-when-you-did-X, etc). One thing currently bugging me is how tough it can be to justify that you want to pursue a given subspecialty. I'm interested in Heme, but it seems like folly to raise a convincing justification when you're hinging it on 0-10 weeks of experience rotating through it.

Coming up on the final third now; will be nice to be done interviewing before Christmas. I'd like to say a little more, but I've already outed my SDN account to a few people.

What do you attribute this to? Is it this way because Pathology is more of a buyer's market?

I have definitely enjoyed the interview trail, visiting different cities and meeting those in our field. My favorites so far have been UWash, WashU, Emory, and Hopkins. All for slightly different reasons, but the residents have been the greatest common factor.

Regarding the interview questions, I was very confused at first by the relatively low emphasis on myself as an applicant. I had been prepping to highlight my strengths and such, and actually tried to veer conversations that way early on if i could. But once I saw that all the interviews involved a good amount of selling by the program, I started to just to go with the flow and focus on establishing good rapport.

has anyone interviewed at upmc? trying to decide if I should cancel my interview there next week or not. Thanks!

What do you attribute this to? Is it this way because Pathology is more of a buyer's market?

Sorry for late reply (and brevity; typing on mobile).

I think the "human economics" of applying do play a role yeah. If programs had to sort through hundreds more applicants then it would make sense for them to use interviewing as a mean of filtering. As things are now only the most elite of programs can afford to turn off applicants with tough interviews (and I perceive that even they're trending away from that).

However, I think the "personality" of pathology also contributes. Whether on the interview trail or on rotations, I've never met a pathology attending or resident that rubbed me poorly. On average people are benign and low-ego. Even the "giants" I've met have been extremely humble and down-to-earth. Senior editors of journals and textbooks walking me to my bus stop while we chat about local food and music scenes, stuff like that.

Any words of wisdom on applying/interviewing for a current MSTP MS3 heavily considering pathology?

Both general advice to any potential applicant and any specific advice given my stats are appreciated.

248 step 1, only 3 pubs during the PhD but all 1st author. Including prior pubs it's 10 total, 5 first author. The rotation grades I have so far have been in the 2nd quartile of my class with 3/4 shelf exams ~90th percentile nationally.

Thanks everyone!

Based on my own experience and in talking to other path applicants you are in a great position to go to the program of your choice. Pathology residency seems to still be considered a "buyers" market. I am MD only, had a 214/234 on step, one poster presentation, name on a paper in the process of being published, and a lot of tutoring experience. I was told I had great letters though (family medicine attending, pathology professor, and ob/gyn clerkship director)...That being said I got interviews pretty much everywhere I applied to. Programs definitely want to know that you are truly interested in pathology. If you haven't already, try to do a path elective or some shadowing to show that (it will also help when it comes time to write the personal statement and interviews). My biggest piece of advice would be to do an away rotation at 1-2 places that you think would be your first choice. Many programs seem to favor people they have worked with or know, especially if you are considering a top academic program that's not in a geographic area you have ties to. Path is also a small, close knit community--don't hesitate to reach out to the pathologists at your school to see if they know someone at places you are considering. Also, you have great stats but show that you have some personality/social life too!

Awesome. Thank you so much for the reply. I've already done a 2 week path elective and am planning on doing another 4 week one later this academic year. I also was a TA for the med school's general pathology course. Hadn't put much thought into aways so thank you very much for that tip. I didn't want to put my life on display here but I think the comments going in my MSPE + my extracurriculars will assuage any fears of no personality/social life. In fact I'm glad to hear that's important because I hate the stereotype of pathologists and it doesn't really jive with my experiences anyway. Thank you for the reassurance. Maybe 1 student/year applies to pathology from my school (and no one in my original class did) so I have no sense as to what path applicants look like aside from what charting outcomes says.

Any helpful resources for learning about specific programs before applying besides faculty at your school, program websites, and SDN?

Thanks again, and good luck!

Does anyone know the typical Step 1 score range for a place like Cleveland Clinic?

Just a quick clarification: the dates everyone is giving are the dates of the actual interview days or the dates you received an invite?

Rank list deadline Feb. 22nd! Anyone have their entire list decided upon? I can only pick my #1 spot so far. Wishing I had some contact from the others to help settle the list. Has anyone had contact with the potential Residency since completing their interviews?

In my experience, programs tend to let candidates drive dialogue. Don't take silence from programs as a sign of lack of interest--I was highly qualified, matched well, and only received an email from one of the residents I interacted with at one program on the trail, as well as my home program. From the programs' perspective, they've interviewed many great candidates, and due to the Match (and having other work to do!), can't invest themselves too much into a particular candidate, much less say/do things which could violate the Match.

So if you want to refresh your memory, reach out to the programs you want to hear from. I sent a letter to my #1 program, informing them of my intentions and listing reasons why I thought I would be a good fit, and after that, they reciprocated with a rank-to-match letter. It was nice to see and allowed me to start looking for housing, but it was by no means a contract and I did go into Match Day with a tiny bit of dread until I opened my envelope!
