I think I understand the distinction u're pointing out, but I sometimes find it confusing. Clearly there's a great deal of self selection that happens with applicants who apply for competitive residencies such as like Ophtho.

Would it accurate to conclude that after self selection, the match rate for US seniors - who apply to Ophtho AND submit rank lists - is 89%?

that is still slightly inaccurate. you get 89% by dividing total number of us seniors matched [402] over the total number matched [455]

what it actually is, the total number of us seniors match divided by the total number of us seniors who submitted a rank list. since the total number of rank lists submitted was 583, if we say all 583 were us seniors, then the US senior match rate would be 402/583 = 69%.

i would think a safer estimate may be anywhere from 85-95%, so maybe 90% of all those submitting rank lists would be us seniors which would make the US senior match rate 402/(0.9 X 583) = 76%.

please let me know if any of this math is wrong

In 2012, there were 751 applicants for 455 positions with an overall match rate of 60% for all CAS participants. For those who submitted a rank list (and therefore attended at least one interview), the overall match rate was 78%. The good news is US medical seniors have a match rate which is much higher than these figures (89%)."

MsForever is right, you can't get the match rate from the stats alone. This has been discussed many a time before on this forum. Here is the 2012 paper from some guys that got the SFMatch to release more data to them showing that the 2011 match rate for us seniors was 83%

so i dont understand one thing:
for the people that didn't get interview invites from the above listed schools, does that mean we won't be getting interviews from them at all?

or will they be sending another batch of interview invites later?

I think it depends on the program. Some only send out one batch, and some send out multiple. They will then send out more invites later for people on the waiting list when interviews get cancelled. That's what my residents told me anyways. Also, a few programs send multiple batches one year and a single batch another year, so it's difficult to predict looking through the old interview threads. I think most programs are pretty consistent though.

Dang, was pretty interested in UTSW. Anybody know if they offer more than 2 waves of interview invites?

last year there was only 1 wave, but in years past there have been multiple so I guess it varies. Also I heard UTSW really only interviews people with ties to TX, don't know how accurate that is though

They probably do like people with ties to TX, but i also know several people who had interviewed and/or matched at UTSW without any ties to TX.

Wisconsin's first interview date is coming up in less than 2 weeks from now (10/11) as well, and I don't think they have offered interviews yet. Perhaps they are waiting for MSPE letters to be released before finalizing the list? :cool:

Sorry I guess I could have posted this earlier. They only gave me 10/11 and I replied that I could not come that date and they gave me 11/1. I think they have one more date but I guess they only give you one at a time so maybe they are waiting to fill up their later dates.

In my experience, that's not accurate. I have no ties to Texas but interviewed there with plenty of other people who were also not from Texas.

quick question, how many interviews do you all have by now?
 
Same here. Although seeing all these invites is getting me a little worried. lol.
 
Yeah already ~30 programs have sent out invites. It's kind of depressing only having a 2 interviews considering 30 is about one quarter of the programs. :( Hopefully many of those programs send out more later, HOPEFULLY
 
four including home school. Am a little worried but I haven't gotten any interview from NY/MA or PA so I'm hoping to get some.

Don't worry. If you check last year's compilation of interview invites, you will note that several programs send out invites in more than one batch.

Wow I totally misunderstood this thread at first. I thought that each of you listing the interview invites had actually received all those invites yourselves. Whew I'm relieved. How, then, are you finding out that invites have been sent?

Along those lines, is there any way to find out which programs send out in batches? I know UC Irvine doesn't :(

If anyone is curious, I have received three.
