Hey all, post if you've received an interview/acceptance letter to UB here! Or you could let us know if you've been rejected. And by all means, feel free to share your stats regardless (but no obligation!)

I just applied a couple days ago, and have no idea how long it will take to hear back.

Did you send in your supplemental app via internet? I tried pressing submit on the pdf, but just got an error. However, my PharmCAS supplemental status says it was submitted...Anybody have problems with this?

I just glanced at the supplemental app, but I'm going to submit it by this weekend. Hmm, I would check with the Admissions Office to see if they have received your supplemental or not. If not, then I guess you can resubmit it.

I had the same problem. But then when I went to submit, it said that is has already been received. Double check with the admissions office, but you should be fine.

PS: I am SO, SO nervous about this!! They should start reviewing in a couple weeks...

I know, this is my number one pick. I went up there this spring to see Stephen Colbert with a buddy who just graduated in May, and checked the school and surrounding area out. Definitely wouldn't mind spending 4 years there. Only 5 hours away from home too (I live in Hyde Park, NY.)

rofl, maybe I'll become a casino addict and fail out.

My number one pick too..

Good luck to you guys :):)

Wow I guess a lot of people are really interested in the UB program this cycle!!! Good luck everyone!!!

I am from NY and would love to attend UB!! I have to retake the PCAT since I did not make the 300 score minimum. This may be a bit far fetched, but does anyone know of someone who got an interview with a below 300 score on the PCAT?

I haven't heard of anyone, but that doesn't mean those people don't exist. If your GPA is awesome, they may give you an interview.

I do know that the average PCAT for the incoming class was a 398 last year.

Good luck:)

Yeah, I emailed them and the woman, I believe it was Christine Stumm encouraged me to still apply. She said they do consider people that do not meet the 300 score. She advised that I should explain in the supplemental why I did so poorly on the PCATs. I applied last year and was rejected, so I am a bit skeptical about applying again with the same scores. I plan to take the Jan PCAT, but I hate that my application is going to be delayed since everything else is done :(. Oh well, I just gotta do everything I can to get into this school. Thanks and good luck to you as well :).

398 is pretty high for an average it seems. I'm above it by a little, but that only makes me more nervous knowing that a lot of people must have done better than me to get accepted! Pair that with my laughable GPA, and I'm counting on ECs, LORs, and my personal statement to pull me through! My personal statement made my mom cry (it's really not an emotion manipulator, not to me anyway), hope it's good enough for the colleges, lol.

I agree, that average is incredibly high. And it irks me that UB is the only school (that I know of) that looks at the PCAT like that. My number is 390, with a composite of 86 so I wished they just looked at that instead.

We're in the same boat, my GPA isn't amazing either.
Just gotta wait it out I guess..

Hyde Park eh? Birthplace of FDR.

I'm from Highland.

Good luck with admissions.

i got a "preliminary interview" that's actually in two weeks. they just notified me a couple days ago. is this a good sign or is this because they wanna drill me about something bad on my app?

No, I think that's the real deal there, definitely a good thing. Keep us posted, and good luck!

And I knew it was only a matter of time before I saw someone else from the Hudson Valley on sd.net, bwsalvas.

although, i do have a friend that has a comp of 393... but her percentile score is a 29%. i don't really understand that. does that mean that everyone else that took it the same year did way better than she did?

is it true that UB only looks at science courses (instead of add'l liberal arts courses)?

From what I understand on their website, they calculate your pre-pharm GPA from your math/science classes.

Yep, this is true. Your pre-pharm GPA is all math/science courses you've ever taken.

all the math/sci courses i've ever taken? if that's the case, i would consider applying to UB's pharm school. i pretty much messed up my first year (in terms of bio courses) so i kind of eliminated UB since their pre-reqs consisted of classes i didn't do too well on.

but i'm graduating this spring with a medicinal chemistry degree... and my grades have gotten way better. would you apply to UB if you were me?

anyone have any insight on the PCAT score question i asked earlier?

I was under the impression that UB does not review complete pharmcas applications until November...which is why I still haven't submitted my pharmcas application (I told my LOR profs that they have till Nov to finish it).

Am I at a disadvantage here?

My stats are:
cGPA: 3.22 :(
sGPA: 3.42
PCAT:430
-Not from U.S.

Hope to see you guys next sept!

well, giraffesarecool said he got an interview, so it would seem they're looking now.

I'm a little confused about that, I spoke with UB on Thursday, they told me they haven't started reviewing applications yet. They are due to start in 1-2 weeks...

I'd apply to UB no matter what because I live about 5 minutes away :)
When I went over there to talk to a pre-pharm advisor, she went through all of my undergrad and grad work, looked at all science courses, and that is how she calculated my math/science GPA.

i think that's y i'm so worried. this is a "preliminary interview" not the real real interview, but they said it would last 30-40 minutes :/

but i did submit my pharmcas app in july and they received my supplemental by mid august.

as far as i'm concerned an interview is an interview :) i'm sure it's the real thing, don't worry!

good luck, let us know how it goes!

So as I was driving to school today, I was listening to NPR and heard that UB school of Pharmacy got a really big, prestigious grant to build some sort of lab, that will be the only one of its kind in the world. I missed the details.

But regardless, do you guys think this will have any implications on admission? Make it more competitive?

edit: i TOTALLY just finally understood what you all were talking about

I just received an email for an invite! They received my supplemental and PharmCAS app on 9/29. However, my interview is on 2/6! That's so long from now. That makes me worried...

Don't worry- thats when the interviews start. In fact- getting an interview then is a good thing.

Wow, congratulations! Are you applying early decision??

Thanks! I'm not. I am actually very surprised to get a response this early. It makes me super hopeful for good responses from the other places I applied to. My stats aren't that impressive, so I'm crossing my fingers about the interview! I wonder what's the likelihood of admittance after the interview stage. Does anyone know? For some schools, they are picky enough that once you get an interview, there's a 50% chance...but I don't know about UB.

It depends on what you mean my messed up. UB looks at the student's overall profile. If you have an explanation whether financially or emotionally for your bad grades they will take it into consideration. I messed up my freshman year in bio too due to personal circumstances and they took it into consideration. If however, your GPA is not great in math/sci like mine was (3.3 math/sci overall 3.5). I would recommend doing well on the PCAT (mine was 420 comp and 91 percentile). If you guys can score an interview you are half way there since they only interviewed around 225-250 and accepts around 125. If you score one, they view you as a potential, just dazzle them on your interview! lol, best of luck! I hope to see you guys during interviews, maybe I will be your tour guide too!

No, I don't think you are, I turned my in by Feb 1, so I'm extremely late. Thank goodness I still made it! lol anyways, I would recommend you turn it in earlier than that since it is a rolling admission, although they would not stop interviewing until April. Your stats would probably get you an interview although I cannot guarantee that! I have similar stats as you did, but UB do look at an applicants overall profile. Do you have a BS or BA? The majority of my class have either a BS, BA, or MS. I hope that this is helpful!

I'm just a third year undergrad.

Just wondering does UB look at trends? My freshman year was horrible, but since the first semester, I've kept on making progress. My GPA/semester has been constantly increasing at a rate of 0.432 per semester (ran a linear regression with R= 0.9914 --> I do a lot of analytical chem :))

I don't have a lot of volunteering, all volunteering I've done was 3 years old... I've shadowed a pharmacist for 4 hours and I'm going to TA introductory Organic Chem this summer (I took the most advanced organic chemistry undergrads can take without grad students mixed in)... that's about it...

Man, I hope I can get to UB, it sucks when you want to be a pharmacist and you're stuck in a chemistry degree.

I don't think chances are going to be too good for me since I'm from Canada and not U.S.

I got waitlisted :hungover:
Anybody else on my boat?

Honestly, my sci GPA is below the cut off, so I'm actually happy that I'm even dangling on the wait list.

Waitlisted already?? did you interview? UB makes me so so nervous!

I think UB first picks the cream of the crop for interviews. Then offers wait list options to people who are not as "creamy" .... like me. :( I guess if people decline interviews/acceptances to UB for whatever reason, then I will get a chance to interview.... SIGHHHH!!

Can I ask how you found out and when they received all of your materials?

Sure! I submitted my supps on 9/30. They emailed me regarding a missing course, which I replied with a course description on 10/8. I got the wait list offer today via email. So check your email!

When did they receive your stuff?

Hm...they had all of my materials by 9/24. All of my pre-reqs are PCAT are done. I called there today and they told me that my file hasn't been reviewed yet. Checked my email..nothing there :(

Hmmmm... one thing that stands out about me was the fact that the prerequisite course they thought I was missing was a writing course, because the course title doesn't look like a writing course at all. So I emailed them back a course description and a bunch of essays that I wrote. Maybe, Maybe, they read the essays and decided to give me a shot? I have no idea. Maybe the missing course work forced them to review my materials earlier? BC my sci GPA & cum GPA are pretty bad. What are you stats?

PCAT is 86 percentile
Overall GPA is 3.3-3.4 (I have undergrad degree in Biomedical Sciences and finishing Master's this year in Cancer Control and Prevention)
I also did alllll of my college work at UB/Roswell Park Cancer Institute and I really, really want to go to UB.
I almost wish they required another essay or something so that I could show them how much I want to go there! lol It's so stressful :)

Yes, UB looks at trends, I've gone to see the pre-pharm advisors there. If you've improved steadily, they will definitely take that into consideration.

OMG, you will probably get an interview. I truly hope you get in. Hah, maybe they've already decided your fate, and they're focusing on unknowns. I think you're good to go. :p

YEP. $60K vs. $150K. Hello?? PLUS, UB is an awesome school. I feel like it should be a no brainer, but apparently a lot of people want to spend more $$ for a crappier education. =P

My stats are sci GPA: 2.97, cum GPA: 3.09, PCAT: 92, 4 LORs, research experience, retail pharmacy experience, and I am a degreeless bum.

haha. NICE PCAT! Further proves my point that GPA is not indicative of what a student knows. I also got 4 LORs, hope UB reads them all, they only required three I think?
Anyways, best of luck to you, and if you're on the waitlist this early, probably means you're at the top and are bound to get a spot!! I've been at UB for the past 6 years so if you have any questions feel free to ask!!

They do look at trends and improvements..we have some Canadian students in the school, but I think there is only one in my year. I did not have a lot of pharmacy working experiences, but I did volunteered in a hospital pharmacy. If you did well on the PCAT and qualified for an interview, your chances improve drastically. Good luck!
