I am a resident at a Canadian university that is considering switching fields and programs. Post-match switches are hard to implement in Canada, so I want to broaden my net and apply to the USA too. For this I will need to write Step I.

How much time do you think I should devote to preparing for Step I to achieve a score considered excellent (>240)?

Moving to Step I forum as not really a general residency topic; perhaps others who have taken other countries' exams prior to taking USMLE step I can give you some insight on this.

In the US, Step I is taken after the second year of med school, and many students take weeks, a month, or more dedicated solely to studying for this. Residents generally only have to worry about taking step 3, which has far less preparation required to take this test and pass.
