Writing a book

Does anyone know the mechanics of writing a book and taking it complete to publishing? I've been seriously considering writing a book about my experiences through medical training and into practice -- don't know that it would sell much but writing has always been cathartic for me.

Unfortunately, after Dr. Kalanithi's autobiographic, there's a very large precedent to live up to whether it be humor, satire or nonfiction.

That said, you've got stories so you have a better chance of going places with this.
