You didn't say what type of residency. I have friends in Gen Surg, Orthopedics, Neurology, Neurosurg, and like myself, IM. We all have different work/life balances. Internship, in general, will suck regardless of your choice. That said, friends have gotten married, had children, gone to Europe, etc. during internship/residency, and you must already know it's "realistic" to settle down and start a family in medicine.
Please read the innumerable threads on this topic if you want more anecdotal experience/opinion - because there is no one answer other than YMMV.
If you are worried enough that you're applying to alternative fields with less perceived demand, I would recommend you seriously consider that over medicine. Nothing is worse for patient care than a disgruntled/burnt-out doc who's in a rush to do the bare minimum and go home.
