Apparently, it's a great time to be getting into general dentisry. The US government expects a shortage of dentists over the next 20 years or so. So if things are going to be so great for GD's, it makes the decision to specialize that much harder.

Since specialists depend upon GD's for referrals, won't a GD shortage make being a specialist even more difficult? Or will the shortage of GD's result in a shortage of specialists and all will even out? What are the trends in specialist graduation rates vs specialist retirement rates?

Input appreciated.

you worry too much.

and the way things are going, in 20 years, we'll probably have much more serious things to worry about than our careers.

I think that the shortage will apply to BOTH general dentists and specialists.

The future looks bright for everybody in the dental field.
