I mean giving applicants the choice of the Academic Track vs. Cliniac Track. It works great for people who want to do research, as they are garanteed to get their research spot. It works even better for people won DONT want to do research, as there is no pressure throughout residency to go to the lab for a year. And no fear that at anytime the decision will be made by someone else to delay their graduation by a year. Its good for the program director, no guess work, no asking the RRC for another chief position. Its good for the research departments as they get a predictable, steady supply of surgeon-scientists who WANT to be surgeon-scientists. It also gives the program access to a number of quality applicants who refuse to do a 7 year program. So why don't more programs do this???
(They spelled it "tract" instead of track on their website... is this a surgical pun? )
