Why does chlorhexidine make your tongue turn black?

So one side effect of chlorhexidine mouth rinses is that it turns your tongue black. What's the mechanism of the staining? My patient is currently using chlorhexidine rinses and his tongue is turning patchy black and so is his temporary crowns. Is the staining on the temps going to be permanent? I'll be on summer break for a month so I'm just trying to determine if the integrity of these temps are going to hold up until I get back. Any advice is appreciated.

Chlorhexidine adsorbs to biofilms and causes a modification of the biofilm properties which allows further adsorption of extrinsic stains. The stain won't hurt the integrity of your temps, but it'll probably be difficult to remove.

clorhexidine should not be used for more than 15 days .

Stannous Fluoride causes stain. Use it only 7days/month your patient will be fine. Never even go for more than 15 days.
