Why did Rad Onc become so competitive

Attendings would tell me Rad Onc used to not be so competitive. 15-20 years ago, Rad Onc used to a specialty reserved for IMG. Not too many U.S. graduate would go into it. How come it became so popular and so competitive in the last 20 years. Did work hours decrease? Compensation increased? Duration of training decreased? People all of the sudden decided they love physics? One other specialty that has been experiencing a growing interest by U.S. graduates is Pathology. Few years ago, their residency decreased from 5 yrs to 4. Did a similar change happen in Rad Onc not too long ago?

no to all that. in fact radonc training increased by one year less than 10 years ago. and relative compensation decreased in some sectors, work hours basically unchanged. See faq for my thoughts on it and those of a chairman i asked.
