What is it like the be an audiologist

I was in neuroanatomy the other day and the teacher talking about the vestibulocochlear nerve and the types of situations where you would contact a neurologist vs. an audiologist. And I realized that audiology is one branch of health care that I know almost nothing about. I have never had to go to one, i have never met one, and no one at my school has ever mentioned one until now. My lack of knowledge probably isn't good, so I do wonder if someone could either tell me more about this field, the typical scope of practice, where you usually work, type of education, or at least point me in the direction where I can find such information.
