Anyone have any interesting ideas on what to buy when we finally make bank?

A nice house is probably is the only thing on my list. I am not into cars or luxury items. I am curious what others plans are?

Nothing really. I'll just be happy to start putting away some decent money for retirement.

Obviously, medical school's do a very good job of recruiting very responsible students. Or, all the crazy med students are still recovering from last nights kegger and havn't got around to checking SDN.

I'm not buying anything until my student loans are paid off.

Then I'm buying a new car, since mine'll be like, 14-15 years old at that point, and likely have 250k+ miles. Something that's a sedan with four wheel drive and a sub-35k price tag..

Then maybe a small house. 200k, tops, and not a part of a HOA, so I can build a greenhouse out back and learn to take care of some plants.

After that, piling away money in investments and real estate until I can retire, hopefully by 5o or 55.

My diploma is totally going into my closet with all the rest of them immediately after graduation and never being seen again.

I will pay off a portion of my debt and send the rest to the government assuming we will all be in the top 2% (who are going to drown under a full blown democratic government) we will be taxed up our ***es by the time we are "making bank". Meanwhile the baker next door to me will be raking in half as much money as income and paying 90% less in taxes to the government so we will both end up affording the same lifestyle.

This is such a far-fetched, overblown overexaggeration that I can't even right now.

The lawyer next door to my parents (owns his own firm) had to pay a total of 500k in taxes (federal and state) for making 900k this last year. You make more you give more. We are moving in that direction as a country whether you like it or not.

You do know that there are tax brackets? You know anything made from 186,000-405,000$ is taxed at a 33% rate. Not everything you make is taxed at that rate...sigh.....never mind. Blaming democrats for your taxes seems like misdirected bigotry as the income tax rate hasn't gone up since Obama took office.....

And your saying Obama had anything to do with this? He has been talking not-stop about taxing the rich for ages.

And how in the hell is it bigoty? Dude says democrats are increasing taxes and you say "bigot", lay off the MSNBC.

That's still 400k after taxes. If bakers make that much then that better be some tasty bread.

I blame Republicans for ruining our economy and I blame Democrats for raising taxes on the rich. Why else do you think the top 1% votes Republican? Because they are racist Faux News supporters? It's because they are voting with their wallets, which undoubtedly will become a large chunk of us that become highly paid specialists to protect our own interests $-wise.

There are federal and state taxes. State taxes will keep hiking as long as we keep administering policies that rely on taxes to afford them. Look at California, any dollar you make over 250k now is taxed up to 55% with everything included. I don't know why you think the taxes haven't gone up for the top 2% since Obama took office, but our precious Hillary Clinton preaches it so much we can hear it in our sleep.

Obviously my example with the baker is an exaggeration, but there is no doubt, we won't be living such luxurious lifestyles that a lot of medical students tend to believe for whatever reason. We are heading towards a country that needs to rely on the high income earners to get us out of the massive debt since, as a country and majority, we don't believe cutting taxes for everyone works.

I'm in a fairly high CoL state and 900k would still have netted him $504,312.75. Or if he lived in a lower CoL state like Texas, he could have earned $564,612.75 instead, without taking any deductions. That's a lot of tax, sure, but that's hardly putting you down to making as much as a baker lol. And this is without taking any deductions- you could easily deduct a lot if you have any business acumen and a good accountant. The guy probably had to pay some hefty property taxes, which are easy to avoid by simply putting your money in capital-generating stocks rather than tax-generating property.

I bet you will also buy some aluminum foil (the good stuff, not the crappy generic stuff), and you'll make a fashionable hat you can wear

Hey I agree that bigotry was probably a hyperbole. Anyways Obama has been fairly progressive tax-wise. The truth of the matter is yes, doctors aren't receiving as much money as they used to. But the tax policies set in place by Obama to increase governmental revenue aren't targeting the majority of doctors' pay. These tax policies are targeting those making over 1 million dollars per year. Do I think we should target the people who work hard and deserve the money they receive such as doctors? Absolutely not. Do I think that the gap between rich and poor in this country is ridiculous and needs to be addressed somehow? Yes. Do I think that taxing the super rich (i.e +1 million dollars a year) is absolutely ridiculous and socialist? No. I completely agree that physicians should be able to keep as much of their salaries as possible for all of the years of training and hard work they have endured.

I'm going to buy my fiancee and I really nice bed. The one we sleep in now was a $300 full size that's progressively going from bad to sleeping on nails.

When I say really nice I don't mean just memory foam or something like that. I mean an oversized king bed with temperature control that you can adjust the position on and change how hard or soft it is. I don't care if it costs $5,000, after spending the past 8 years on terrible mattresses and probably the next 7-8 as well I'm going to get myself the best. I may not get much sleep as a physician, but when I do get to sleep I'm going to make sure it's like a toddler that just threw a ten hour tantrum then took a bunch of Nyquil.

Order of priorities
1. Pay off loans
2. Catch up retirement savings (we are basically 10 years behind)
3. Save for a downpayment on a house
4. Emergency fund
5. Vacation to where ever the hell I want to go, first class.

Sounds awfully similar to my plan. Paying off debt is priority number 1, followed closely by treating myself to a nice new pair of skis/snowboard (whatever I'm into at that point) and a season pass to the nearest resort for any days off I might have. And of course a nice new Subaru to get me up to the mountains.

Just pick Dartmouth, UVM, Univ of Colorado, or Utah for med school.

I always tell myself I'll never do #5 because the price for 1st class tickets is absolutely ridiculous sometimes. But I feel like I always get stuck next to someone with a BMI of 45 and I hate my life for the next few hours.

My first check will probably go to my mom as a good gesture. She'll probably refuse, so if so then it'll probably go towards an engagement ring or first place downpayment.

Bed.
Ain't nothing like sleeping on a mattress that costs more than some peoples cars. (You can spend a hell of a lot more than $5k on a mattress.)
Seriously.

Just looked this up.

My God, some of those numbers are obscene.

The truth is we don't pay enough in taxes both federal and state. There are companies that operate here who pay nothing in federal income tax. The other party just tried to repeal the estate tax which has been in place for over a hundred years and affects only 5,500 families in the top 0.2% - so pretty much not most doctors. That's fine, but then don't complain about your student loans when those med school costs are passed on to you. I think Democrats should increase taxes on everyone - but mainly at the state level so it can help everyone in that state.

Honestly, my first two somewhat expensive purchases after I started making "doctor" monies were Kaus' 30th birthday present, and first class tickets to india for my parents.

If we're talking wish lists, I want a luxury sedan and a ~5k sq foot house w/ a pool.

I find this unlikely... In Canada nobody is ever paying more than 50% of their income in taxes, no matter how many billions you earn, and doesn't the US have less income taxes than Canada? Or is that a myth?
