Water flosser v standard floss?

I have found virtually no objective info on this online so I am very curious to hear from the experts here regarding the effectiveness of the water pik flosser. I am seriously considering buying one (like 60 bucks) but before I do I would like to know how effective it is, is it a substitute for standard floss, or is it just an adjunct to flossing and brushing, or is it just unnecessary for most people and I shouldn't buy it?
