Hi, everyone!

With the application cycle coming up, I have been working hard and trying to create a solid school list. I am a FAP recipient so I'm aiming for a broad school list of around 40! Although I hope to stay in CA, I understand that it is really hard. Would prefer MD, but open to DO as well.

  1. cGPA and sGPA as calculated by AMCAS or AACOMAS
    • cGPA 3.52 (2.45/3.88/3.85/ 3.89); 3.42 (2.07/3.83/3.84/3.96)
    • B.S. Psychobiology from UCLA
  2. MCAT score(s) and breakdown
    • 513 (130/126/129/128)
  3. State of residence or country of citizenship (if non-US)
    • California
  4. Ethnicity and/or race
    • ORM, Korean male
  5. Clinical experience (volunteer and non-volunteer)
    • ~ 860 hours (head scribe for ophthalmologist)
  6. Research experience and productivity
    • ~ 75 hours as a research assistant for ecological preservation
  7. Shadowing experience and specialties represented
    • 30 hours shadowing ophthalmologist
    • 30 hours shadowing cardiologist
    • Planning on shadowing primary care provider if needed after submission
  8. Non-clinical volunteering
    • ~ 1040 hours volunteering for a marginalized community in Mexico since 2010
    • ~ 400 hours volunteering teaching piano and tutoring for underserved children
    • ~ 2700 hours as a volunteer for church & leader of youth ministry since 2011
    • ~ 150 hours volunteering for a senior center, delivering lunch and food for seniors during COVID
  9. Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc)
    • ~ 920 hours private tutor for an academy (paid)
    • ~ 300 hours as a science teaching assistant for a high school
    • ~ 400 hours as co-founder/general manager of a fashion production company (donate extra clothes to the homeless and underserved)
    • ~ 400 hours as a co-founder/primary editor of a music youtube channel (amassed 2k subs in less than a year)
    • ~ 5000 hours playing piano (competitively and casually) and synthesizer since 2006

I'm applying with similar stats as you! Best of luck! I was wondering about applying to Central Michigan as well (I'm not a Michigan resident, I'm from Minnesota). Do you know if they are out of state friendly?

Some of the schools you are applying to are unrealistic with your GPAs. I suggest these schools with your stats:
California University
Kaiser
Loma Linda (if you fit their mission)
UC Davis
UC Irvine
UC Riverside (if you are from that region)
TCU
Creighton
Rosalind Franklin
Rush
Loyola
Medical College Wisconsin
Western Michigan
Oakland Beaumont
NOVA MD
Wake Forest
Virginia Commonwealth
Eastern Virginia
George Washington
Georgetown
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
Penn State
Hackensack
New York Medical College
Albany
Einstein
Vermont
Quinnipiac

Honestly, I don't think they are as out of state friendly as I thought they are. This was a tentative list and now looking at the FAQ I see that they say they enroll 20% out-of-state. It's not their acceptance statistic, but I'm going to look into it a little more. If I find out, I'll let you know!

Good luck to you as well!

Thank you for your input! I'll definitely look into those and probably use your recommendations for the majority.

You will not need to apply DO schools in my opinion, especially given your strong mission-fit from your community service and volunteering experiences. Your EC's are splendid and you should receive several II's and a successful cycle as long as you write your PS and secondaries well.
