Looking for general guidance and school list advice. At the moment, my top choice is the Jacobs School of Medicine (Buffalo). Aside from that, I am happy with any school - but the closer to NY the better. Don’t really care about rank stuff, just would prefer not to take a gap year. I plan to apply to 20-25 MD schools. Having a tricky time mapping things out since my grades/stats are good, but clinical/research/volunteering things are quite lackluster in comparison. I will list out some general information about my application, and will add a rough list of schools that I’m considering. Feel free to note any comments/concerns with anything at all. Thank you for your time!

Current Junior
NY Resident.
ORM - White
Undergrad: Buffalo

Grades:

-cGPA/sGPA: 3.94/3.92
-MCAT: 520 (129/128/132/131)
Clinical:
-300 hours ER/Hospital Volunteer in several departments at the same hospital. (+100 projected)
Shadowing:
-65 hours (Family Med, ER, Pathology, Neurosurgery)
Research:
-100 hours Bio research assistant.
-50 hours Bio research assistant (+800 projected - {full time this summer, 15hr/week all next year})
Non-Clinical Volunteering:
-150 hours as a Crisis Text Line Counselor
-80 hours of random things
NCAA Athletics:
-3200 hours Division 1 Track/Cross Country (main reason for my lack of hours elsewhere) (+1000 projected)
Other:
-1000 hours non-clinical work: Roofing, Siding, Carpentry, etc.
-250 construction/carpentry self employment
-200 hours independent secondary research project. I am not doing any data collection, but rather analyzing other data that has been published. Probably will do a poster next year. This is very meaningful to me and is related to running and my injury experiences, but I am currently independent with no PI yet so I probably shouldn’t list it under research (Right?). Perhaps will list is under "other" and note that I plan to progress to a true research project.

The main things I'll consider are cost and proximity to NY

Thank you very much for the reply!! Is yield protection really a thing? Considering that I'm above Jacobs (Buffalo) 90th percentile for stats, is there any way to let them know that they are my top choice this summer to avoid any pre-interview yield protection? I emailed the admission's office awhile ago to even inquire a little about early decision, but I never heard back.

I feel that I'm in a weird position where I'm not really a good match for any schools. The "lower tier" schools may want to see more volunteering/clinical which I don't have, and the "higher tier" schools will like the grades, but may want to see more research which I dont have (yet).

It looks like Jacobs is your home institution. They will usually prioritize in state and local students and look past other stuff, so you should be fine. Same for any other public state schools in NY.

State public schools do not "yield protect" and you are a NY resident so all 4 SUNYs could be interested in you.

Pack fodder at top 20s! You've checked the boxes and were a Division I athlete. You should get some interviews.
