Hi Everyone,
I wanted to start this thread for those applying for the 5+2 Vascular fellowship 2020-2021.
With applications opening up soon, I have been finalizing CV stuff, LORs, and personal statement. We will attempt to post the important dates with regards to our match cycle. Good luck to all.

What's everyone's thoughts about programs with concurrent 0+5 training. I know there are pros and cons. But how are you factoring this into decisions. Good luck all.

PS: Good resource for all the endovascular stuff. Great reviews. Hastens grasp of the simple stuff and move unto the more complex.

I’d say it depends; I’m an integrated senior resident and we do not have fellows as they were phased out. Our volume supports an integrated residency very well but would be painful to have both in our current set up. Just make sure there is enough volume and “separation” so that you all don’t cross paths too much when it comes to cases you both want to do. Other people from other programs have said there can be a fair amount of friction. I would just say to look at how an individual program is set up.

Could not care less. I rather enjoy being at a place that has both, there's a lot to be learned from each other. As long as there's ample case volume and there are no issues with staff retention it's a moot point.

I feel similarly. I'm currently at a general surgery residency with an integrated vascular program but no fellowship. The case volume is certainly high enough to support the addition of a fellow. The amount of friction, in my opinion, would be dependent on the fellow. The reality that I don't think a lot of general surgery trained fellows want to admit is that most junior level vascular residents have more vascular experience and technical skill than they do (but I can't imagine a vascular junior doing complex laparoscopy, different skill sets). So the fellow would have to put their ego aside and understand that in some ways, they're "equivalent" to a junior-level resident. The other issue is that attendings have been working with the vascular surgery residents for years; they know each other and have built up a relationship. As the fellow, you're "the new guy" (or girl) and you'll have to build that relationship from scratch.

I'm looking at programs both with stand alone fellowships and with integrated residencies. It'll be interesting to speak with current fellows about the logistics of working with vascular residents (one perk, I imagine, is a larger call pool).

Is anyone still waiting on letters of recommendation? I have 2 out of 4 available, another thats been uploaded, but still being processed by EFDO, and another that hasn't been uploaded by letter writer (who also happens to be my program director :cautious:). Otherwise my application is done and I can submit today. Anyone else in a similar predicament? Thoughts on submitting with missing letters vs waiting until all are available? Not sure how/if this process differs from residency.

Not a fellow anymore, but did fellowship at a place that had both 0+5 and 5+2. Residency at a place with just fellows. Currently work at a place that has both, but due to my specific location I mostly only interact with the PGY3 0+5.

I think it will depend on how your program sets it up. IMHO Ideally the integrated 4/5 are treated equal to the 1st/2nd year fellows. Both have some experience that the other doesn’t at the beginning of the PGY4 vs 1st year fellow years, but a lot of that evens out pretty quickly. As long as there is adequate volume and distribution of rotations for everyone, I don’t think it makes a difference.

I don't have much of an answer but I'm in a similar boat. Still waiting on 1 LoR to be uploaded in order to complete/submit my application. Would've liked to have had it all submitted today too. But what can ya do. I'm hoping that the fellowships are more laid back in reviewing applications than gen surg residency seemed to be. I remember everyone making a big deal out submitting your residency application ASAP, but I'm hoping it's not that strict for fellowship.

Regarding letters I can attest #1 you can upload them at any time so submit without them if you need to #2 i know for sure that one of my coresidents last year was offered the majority of his interviews with only 2 letters (one writer notoriously tardy) and #3 we keep a spreadsheet of interview invite dates from past applicants and while the vast majority seem to be in December and January there are some outliers. That being said today is still tremendously early; maybe something next week...

I think you can certainly add because there are plenty of programs that haven’t even decided who they’re interviewing at this point. One thing—your experience may vary— I think that it’s many people’s tendencies to apply first to the places they’re really actually interested in and then get nervous and scramble a bit and add a few more.. and then end up with enough interviews anyway and cancel many of those add-ons. That being said it’s just money; go for it if you think it’s what you want to do; it’s definitely not futile at this point.

Figured I would start a list out of curiosity, feel free to add on.

Are people under the impression that

1. places are sending out invites a lot later?
Or
2. Were not posting the invites?

what does everyone think?

comparing to last years thread the rate at which invites are released seems the same. Last year it seems like many programs still hadnt sent out invites by mid january.
I’m curious what the number of applicants is this year.

I have had my mentors inquire to places they know people at, and it seemed like at a lot of places they just hadn’t sent invites yet, so I’m hoping that’s the case...I think because people don’t have to arrange travel it also gives programs more time as well
