Does anyone know how long the rabies vaccination lasts in people? Are there suggested schedules for re-vaccination from a public health standpoint? For those in vet school does your school have a schedule for human rabies vaccination and is it suggested or mandatory?

We're required to get titers done every two years, and as long as the numbers of antibodies are high enough, we don't have to be re-vaccinated.

The CDC recommends that veterinarians and vet students receive the full first series of vaccines, but states that subsequent titers or booster shots are not necessary.

That depends on your particular region. If you're a veterinarian or staff in a rabies enzootic area (much of N. America), you're considered to be in the frequent-risk category and should have a serum sample tested for rabies antibody every 2 years. If the titer is less than complete neutralization at a 1:5 serum dilution by the RFFIT, you should receive a booster.

Now that is something I would have never even thought to consider...

Makes you wonder if our animal rights friends would insist on the Imovax vaccine then because it doesn't use animal cell cultures...
