USN class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The info can all be there and yet people can still fail. On our first exam we had about 40% failure rate yet all the info was in the slides. People just didn't learn it adequately or didn't understand what was there. With the amount of info we get, it isn't a stretch to think that some people didn't have time to learn it all.

With all due respect, I thought the topic of this thread was USN. I never claimed to speak for the P2 year. I was talking about my experiences only. I'm not going to stop posting because your interest is only on the P2 year. Perhaps some people are interested in different perspectives or want to know what is going on in the P1 year. Besides, I like to post.

I can see that you love to post. You seem to have tremendous time on your hands. It's very encouraging to see that at least P1 is so easy and takes so little time out of your day. I'm still (as well as the majority of us judging by the number of private messages I've been getting) highly interested in hearing about P2, and HOPE that we will have that happen very soon.

So... I did good on my interview, or at least I thought so! But still got waitlisted.
Do you think I should email the professor who interveiwed me and ask about my interview score? Or should I just wait untill June 7th and call Dr. Deyoung about my ranking on the wait list?!!

Do you know whether you're in the top 25, 50 or 100+? Or they haven't given you that info yet?

TOP 100, but I don't know if I am 52 or 99?!! ;)

I'm 100+ on waiting list. But, I thought I did really well on my interview. I answered all ~15 questions with a professional response. I think my original theory of Dr. mandel being super strict, and not easy going like most of the other interviewers, killed my chances. Why else? I answered all questions and elaborated, demonstrating honesty, leadership, desire to help classmates succeed, and desire to be a pharmacist. WTF? I thought interview was 2/3 of your score. Unless I did terrible how would I get 100+.

I might email Dr. Mandel and ask him how I did on my interview. I thought I did awesome and connected well with all 3 interviewers, but am 100 + on waiting list.

The Admissions Office does not provide score outlines to candidates. -Michael DeYoung, RPh, PhD

but we can email our interviewers? do you think they will actually tell us?

I was actually thinking about emailing him if I dont get in and ask him WTF? I know I did really well on my interview, theres no way 100 + people did better.

Not to be rude, but since you're in the 100+ that means that, going by last years stats, at least 338 people did better than you. It sucks, but I'm in almost the same boat, so I understand why you are frustrated.

well of course i'll be nice about it and make it very professional lol. I'll ask how I can improve for next year and what advice, and things to work on, he would give me. I was always amazing at job interviews so it is very frustrating why i'm 100+ on the list. It's probably because the bar is set very high. Anyone who applies to pharmacy school, especially those granted an interview, are very smart and top students.

I have a 3.2 GPA, low PCAT, and no degree.... On the upside I think I did pretty well on my interview. - pharmacy4444.

sorry but i think the interview said to be a huge part of the admisssion score is just to give the school some flexibility on who they choose.
your gpa is low and so is your pcat and you have no degree.
It's all subjective you can't really say 100+ people did better than you.

I'm 100+ too so I'm also like "what the heck??" but I'm just gonna swallow a hard pill and leave it at that.

I say let's leave them alone for now...They got a lot on their plates. I suggest e-mailing Dr. DeYoung on june 7th when he e-mails you about your waitlist status.

Where did you get 338???

I am interested in hearing all perspectives. It doesn't seem there are any P2's on here, so what can we do about it? But anyone has the right to post however often they want to. They shouldn't be ridiculed because they are giving their perspective.

I heard that 40/60 points are awared for the interview. So even if I got a 10/20 on other parts, i think I would get better than 100+. There were 2 people at my table of 4 that said they did terrible on their interview. They said they were asked 3- 5 questions, their interview lasted 10 minutes, and for 1 or 2 of the questions they went blank and had no answer. I think its racism...j/k im a white single male.;)

Where did you get 338???

Based on last years admission and this years wait list. So total admitted last year were 238, and since he is on the 100+ list, I gather that all those that are already in plus those that are on the list ahead of him. That gives my 338. Its a rough estimate, but the point is that a lot more than the 100 in front of him on the wait list did better.

Sorry for the confusion.

Correct me if I'm wrong. 238 was the total number that got accepted to both campuses right?

So I'm new here and got accepted to USN-Henderson (yay!). My interview was 2/16 in Henderson. However, after reading all the negative posts about USN I've been freaking out, so I thought I'd ask you guys... my other choice is UNM (University of New Mexico) which is a 4 year program that I got accepted to. What would be the most intelligent choice? I'm guessing it would be UNM since I'm a resident of NM and will have in-state tuition, but it was always my want to leave NM and USN's 3 year program is very attractive. I'm just really afraid that all the money I put into USN won't be worth it :/ I don't have much time.... my deadline's Monday!!! Any last minute advice/words of wisdom would be very helpful :)

If I had the option to go to a cheaper school, I would take it. But I don't the curriculum for both schools so I can't give you a straight answer.

Current NM resident here - UNM for sure! I might be a little biased though....I like UNM. The 3yr block format of USN may be tempting but think of the money you will save.

Yes it will be cheaper to attend UNM, but you also have to think about that extra year of salary you will get after graduating from USN a year earlier. I am not sure what the tuition is for UNM, but the extra year of salary may balance out the extra cost of USN. You'll have to do the math.

spam10123, where you waitlisted? If so, what was your rank?

spam- UNM! Its cheaper, not to mention, they have a great b-ball team and the pit is an awesome atmosphere.

Since I'm 100+ on the waitlist, I wanna tell you to go to NM. :D

But honestly, I wouldn't get too freaked out about the program. If you choose USN, look at it like a challenge and a chance to excel and really learn the stuff to be the best pharmacist you can be.

But, go to NM. :D

How much is the tuition at UNM and are you thinking of doing a residency?

I like hearing info about both p1 and p2...and p3 if anyone can contribute.

I guess in a nutshell, USN is gonna be HARDER than other schools.

Ok, so I'm a P2 at South Jordan. I don't really know what's going on in Henderson but I can answer questions you may have about P2/program/school in general.

Yes, P2 is crazy hard. This program is brutal, it really is. It's so hard that I literally cried a few times. But it's doable. I only failed two tests this year and both times by 1 point. I have many friends that never had to remediate. But if you need a lot of time to get things down, you're doomed. There just isn't enough time and there is ridiculous amount of info to cover for each test.

A piece of advice: get a job as a tech/intern ASAP! It would have been much easier for me if I was at least familiar with drug names.

Overall, I think we had some amazing teachers this year. We also had some bad ones. That's just what it is. I don't think it's possible to find a school that only has good teachers. Vast majority of teachers were very knowledgable and specialists in what they taught, just not great teachers sometimes. Heck, I know I couldn't do it (ie. teach)!

Our campus has a 100% NAPLEX pass rate, that is a pretty awesome result, don't you think?

Anyway, I like the school overall. But it's important to realize that what you will get out of it depends on what you put in.

Good luck and congrats to all accepted ones!

PM me if you'd like.

Wow! I'm soooo sad that I haven't utilized SDN sooner, you guys are great with the responses (definitely gonna stick around now that I know how wonderful the community is :)). The tuition at UNM is between 12-13,000, although I heard it would go up (correct me someone if i'm wrong)... did the math and even with the extra year's worth of salary by going to USN I would still save a considerable amount of money, knowing the tuition rate at USN's close to 40,000. plus, i'm mainly focused on community pharmacy, so i never really thought too much on residency. the only thing that is making me wanna move is that i've been in NM my whole life... blah lol. and the fact that i'll be done with school a lot sooner at USN, plus their block schedule, which i really like. honestly its not the money i'm incredibly worried about (although i honestly should be)... its the curriculum and its format. I would hate to attend USN only to become one of those with the horror stories. maybe someone could tell me their idea of pros and cons of the accelerated 3 yr block program vs the traditional 4 yr program??

I really like the block system but there are some downsides. I like that we have regular exams so you aren't burdened with tons of work during finals or midterms like you are in a traditional program. I like that we learn one thing at a time though some days are torture if the prof or the material isn't that interesting. Seven hours a day of a topic you don't care for is not fun.

We do have exams every other week so if you are the type to procrastinate, that probably won't work out well unless you are the type who just picks things up after hearing it once. The problem with having exams so often is that you are always focused on the present material so it is easy to forget things you learned in previous blocks. I have heard that in four year schools, you have more time to absorb the material but since I am only in the one system, I can't say if that is true or not. Plus I have had retail pharmacists tell me that you won't need half the things you learn in school so that might not be a problem.

Oh, I almost forgot my favorite part: three day weekends if you pass your exams on Friday. You won't get that in a traditional school. Then there is that extra year of school in a four year plan. If you are anxious to get out, skipping the fourth year is a good thing. If you think working is well, work, like me, then the fourth year shouldn't be such a big deal.

That leaves money and leaving the state. USN is expensive. It costs $40K plus living expenses. During my interview, a P2 said that the average student graduates with a $180K in debt. My poor husband nearly choked when I told him that. I just try not to think about it too much. That is a big bill for leaving the state. But if you think you will be happier and don't mind the debt then USN might not be a bad choice for you.

Diastole, I just want to say that you are one of the best posters on here. You give great information and remain as unbiased as possible. I appreciate your honesty and your contributions, especially in USN threads.

Nothing for me so far! Do you think we will hear anything before June 7th?

Hope so...I really hope soo...It's only a month away? What are the chances of 50 students dropping seats in Nevada by then? lol

Hang in there. There will be people dropping out... a friend of mine in the class didn't get the notice until school almost start in August. Goodluck!

It is really surprising how so many people wanted to go to the Henderson campus.. there's been quite a few of the p1s this year transfering over to the Henderson campus next year. So Henderson people will be seeing a lot of unfamiliar faces.

Well, if the tuition is that low. I would definitely reconsider attending UNM. 180K vs. 30K is a huge difference. 4 years education at UNM is less than a year at USN. However, the decision is really up to you. Goodluck with your decision! :xf:

My brother was telling me that a couple of days ago. That many people from the Utah location are transferring the Nevada location.

A little update. I just got an e-mail from a Dawn Ihrig (don't sure if I should include the Dr. any students know who Dawn is can tell me). It looks like Dr. DeYoung is out until the 17th. I e-mailed him to see if they got my waitlist package...So, for those waiting don't expect much until the 17th.

You mean people who are P1s now and will be P2s next year? Oh, I hope so. We are starting to get a lot of empty seats.

Yeah, they will be transferring to Henderson as P2s (I think about 10 of them). I guess that works out for the better because some people are coming back as P2s from our current class too. :)

thanks everyone for the input, i really appreciate all the great info. i've decided on UNM, so yes... another empty seat up for grabs :) guess i'll just be making trips up to good old vegas instead! good luck to everyone! i'll definitely stay up to date with this class though, to see what i missed ;)
