Another record year for USC first year cost of attendance. The upcoming 2021-2022 academic year numbers are another excuse for the unreasonable cost of dental school.

The first year numbers are based on both first year direct (tuition and fees) and indirect costs (budget for living, room and board, etc).

2012: $114k (4% increase)
2013: $123k (8%)
2014: $127k (3%)
2015: $130k (2%)
2016: $134k (3%)
2017: $137k (2%)
2018: $140k (2%)
2019: $149k (6%)
2020: $152k (2%) (COVID-19, full remote learning)
2022: $154k (1%)

2023: ? (Projected to be $155-160k if fees go up 1–3%)

*Loan origination fees (1-4%) and interest are not included.

*All post-doc programs fees are also up. Will cost additional $300-400k to specialize at this institution.

Damn. What they pay in 1 year is what I'll pay after 4 years of DS going to an in-state school.

Genuinely saddened by the existence of these schools.

They are leading young dentists to becoming debt slaves. While of course the students need to take personal responsibility, wonder how the admin at those schools can sleep at night? knowing their students will likely be entrapped for years if not decades, and then likely push it on to pts by more aggressive tx planning, likely at large corp offices.

worse for the students, worse for the health of our society.

this is leading to a very negative outlook for the profession.

There isn’t much awareness on this issues within the dental field and specially by majority of dentists (50+ age group).

Once in a while, I ask an older dentist how much dental schools are charging these days. The overwhelming majority have 0 idea and with no reference point. It’s a non-starter for them. Just shows how fractured the profession is from within.

Meanwhile, the governing body of the profession, the ADA, is holding conventions and symposiums sponsored by DSO’s, with paid for GALAs from these expensive schools - without addressing the 800,000 pounds dental school cost crisis gorilla in the room.

Not sure what it will take to warn future pre-dents to avert them from applying to these uber expensive schools and not take out these career changing and treatment impacting student loans. We certainly tried on these forums by posting enough threads about it. There are a lot of podcasts, YouTube videos and blogs out there to address it - and they can’t get through to these naive pre-dents either.

Hey ColdFront,

I actually was one of the few that read your warning post about 6 years ago and take it to heart. I made it to the in state school that give residence after 1 year and made it out w 300k debt after cost of living and compound interest included. it is not low per say but it is definitely not soul crushing.

your post is actulaly helping a lot of people and I appreciate reading posts like this.

Predents, it is sould crushing to be a general dentist carrying 500k+ student loan no matter how you look at it. nowadays we are talking 600k+ or near 700k which is banana crazy.

I can't believe it's already been a year since the last thread. This is like an SDN holiday.

Majority of pre-dents who are taking their DAT this year wont be dentists for another 5-6 years. Or specialists for another 7-10 years. The door closed behind them already, because most have mentally committed to the profession - at all cost.

No way the current dentist income will change much over the next decade, probably go down relative to inflation - but the cost of dental school and fees will continue to rise into the abyss. USC will cost $190-200k just their first year in 10 years - at the current rate of 1-3% yearly increase.

This is absolutely wild. Where is all this money going to?

I wonder how many people are getting scholarships. I feel like common sense would tell 90% of people not to go there if you'll have to pay the full cost.

Common sense is not common. The best scholarships out there are military scholarships. They would be happy to foot the bill, provided you are in full metal jacket physical and health shape. I have seen students got denied the military scholarships because they had type 1 diabetes, asthma, seizures, had trouble squatting and other chronic conditions. It’s not a default thing as many would assume. Not sure about NHSC scholarships, but they too have their own touch and go policies.

Those are the best scholarships but I meant if the school specifically has scholarships for incoming students that would cover some or most of the tuition. I was wondering if most incoming students had usc give them a scholarship and that's why they chose to go there.
