So I finally decided to go to Penn over Columbia, Tufts (merit), Buffalo, and Stony Brook. Here is to the future in Philly and hopefully not living in Samson!

Good for you. I sent in my deposit yesterday and for the time being, I'm also a future Penn student. There are a few schools that could change my mind though. We'll see what happens. The worst case is that I end up at Penn and that's one SWEET worst case :D

Count me in too. I hope I don't end up in Samson either!! Anyone need a room mate?

i'll be there too! sent in my deposit a few days ago...looking forward =D

It is Sansom.

Sprgrover's advice of the month? STAY AWAY FROM SANSOM! There's no need for you to shack up in a high rise bunker when there are plenty of good private housing options around campus.

Feel free to shoot me a PM or IM me (Sprgrover63) if you have any questions about Penn, housing, or if you are worried and freaked out about something. I'm a pretty nice guy, and since you all are going to be a part of the Penn family, I want to make sure you get off to a good start.

I can totally relate. I feel the same way. I talked to the lady at the housing office and she told me that Penn is surrounded by a somewhat bad area and that the apartments that are in good areas nearby are really expensive. Sansom seems like a good place to live until I figure out what the good areas are, but I dunno how nice it is...I'm afraid of looking for the most affordable place and ending up in a scary area.

I totally agree with the highlighted parts of your statement Mayo123. I'd rather live in a closet of an apartment than end up in a shady part of town cos it is cheaper. And yes, finding good AND safe accomodation is especially important for single women. :scared: :scared:

Your mind is so dirty, young grasshopper. Once you are inside the cult of PennDental you'll discover that if we didn't care about you we wouldn't offer to wash your brain, shave your head, and invite you to wear a red and blue tunic like the rest of us.

The areas close to campus 43rd and below aren't bad at all. I would recommend visiting the housing office and they will provide you with all the information about which apartments are nice. A lot of dental students (including females) seem to live in 4111 Walnut which is really nice and safe.

Or we could all bitch about Sansom all year long and get nice places 2nd year...

well sansom couldnt be all that bad if we all lived there!

uhh...i think you mean physician, surgeon, etc. because dentists are doctors too :D But hey, it would be nice for you to marry a doctor, let's see how his big ego deals with his wife bringing in more bank than him :D

I thought it was Samson. I should've looked it more carefully.. haha.. Anyway, I'm planning to live in Sansom because it seems to be very close to the gym according to the campus map. But everyone says Sansom is not a good place to live. :( I wish I could see some photos of rooms in Sansom.

nahh I finally decided on Penn. :D :D

Congrats…it is an awesome school. It is not only a d-school within an Ivy League university but it is also an Ivy League d-school. Just one look at the gorgeous building would give you the Ivy League vibe. I felt that it was a great school from the beginning because it was the only one that sent me a nice handsome brochure, along with the supplemental application. Besides, Penn is very creative in selecting its students, and thus you’ll meet some cool kats over there. It’s not just about stats and DATs there. You can have high DATs but if you’re not cool, they won’t take you. At Columbia, all you need is a high DAT. Simple as that! In terms of curriculum, Penn offers great didactics but not at the expense of clinical practice, which means that students graduate with a balanced education. Last but certainly not least, the connections one can make at Penn are out of this world. Moreover, you guys are not just going to get a dental education: you’re in for a life experience. You’re going to mingle with cool people from other grad schools and you’re going to enjoy the awesome campus. Good for you guys……

Oh, fightingspirit. That was cute. Here's a big bear hug from all of us and muah! That's for being so positive.

Here are some photos of Sansom. They are mostly common area shots, but it gives you an idea of how the facilities have never been updated. I'm a senior at penn now and i'm sticking around for dental school. After 3.5 years, i'd say i know the area pretty well. There are much nicer places to live that don't cost any more. The only upside to Sansom is that the apartments are furnished (minimally) and you don't have to sign a 12 month lease. You can find much nicer housing closer to the dental school. Just stay between baltimore and chestnut streets and I wouldn't go further west than 43rd or so. Overall, penn is a well-lit, safe, and self-contained area and there are penn police on every corner. I'm pretty comfortable walking around at all times of the day as long as there are other people around. You always have the option to call for a walking escort and they usually congregate around the library and bars ready to accompany you home.

Thanks for the pics. I think it's interesting that they had all the pictures BUT the most important ones. I couldn't care less if they had no chairs in the "common area." So If there's no 12 month lease is there another type of lease like say per semester? Chances are, I may end up there till I know my way around and till I get a better feel for the area. Some kindsa info you just have to live in a place to understand. If there's no lease then i can stay there for a few weeks and If I absolutely hate it, I'll get out. :D

Actually, yes. Gimme all the good info you get and your recommendations and tips. :D
Here's stuff WE:D would appreciate.
1. Location, location, location-- SAFE, near school and other cool places.
2. Size-- not too small. :D
3. Functional bathrooms and location of these--preferable not next to the kitchen and NO, I don't want guests walking thru my bedroom to use my bathroom.
4. Central heating? You'd be suprised.
5. Washer and dryer IN the apartment-- It's hard enough to motivate myself to do laundry BUT having to carry all that beyond 0.001mile? Nah.
6. Location, location, location-- SAFE, QUIET--we do need to study you know :) , no stupid trees near my window for some freak to climb through.
7. Security-- What do they have in place? Alarm system? Door man  ? Security lights that work.
8. If the stairs creak and wobble--HECK NO!
9. How are the walls? Can you hear the neighbor's every step/sound? NO! I do not want to listen to Tania and her Papi go at it every night.
One last thing, run the faucets/taps and make sure no pipe leaks, flush the toilets to see if there's the annoying endless flow of water, you'd be suprised how much torture they can be on a quiet night.
Thanks for saying yes girl. You're the BOMB! Luv ya!:D
ALMOST forgot-- Not too expensive. : :D

In terms of location, a very good choice would be to stay within a few blocks of school. Not only is it convenient, but it's safe as well. Campus Police (who are real police officers, by the way) patrol on bike over to about 43rd street, so you might consider staying east of, say, 46th street or so. Staying south of Chestnut or Market might be a good bet, too.

Some folks commute from Center City or other parts of town, but from what they say it sounds like a pain. It's not a bad idea to live in University City for a year or two and see how you like it. I like it, myself. I'm on 43rd and Spruce and it's not a bad place at all. We get mice in here, which isn't cool, but it happens in this part of town. You might want to ask about that when you see places.

Oh yeah, it can get pretty warm here during the summer months. If there isn't central air, find out if you can install a window A/C unit if you want it. Believe me, it helps.

I think you all will be very pleased with your decision to come here. Congrats!

MICE?!!

Um, yeah. Unfortunately it is sort of par for the course with city living. It could be worse... evidently they have a bedbug problem in New York City.

Very sound advice from a knowledgable source.

In regards to the mice issue - yes, they do exist and they are a fact of life for some of us (myself, thankfully excluded). When you are apartment hunting look under the sink and other such out of the way places for the presence of traps as this will alert you to any potential vermin problem.

thanks for the advice guys!! gosh, all this mice talk makes me wanna reconsider living in the city and just commute from home haha kidding, mice are definitely a little easier to live with than parents.

where are all you guys coming from? anyone from the area or going to school in the area? im from the philly area, about a 45 minute train-ride. i go to school about 4 hrs from philly though. anyone closer?

That's a long commute. Better wake up early to beat traffic

sooo i called some realtors and apparently im way too early to be looking. most realtors only require a 30 or 60-day notice that you are moving out, so he told me to call back in june/july. he said 4 million apartments will open up then so not to worry. phewww i didnt really feel like going through the stress of finding a place just yet anyway. looks like friday in the city is now for shopping and cheesesteaks :D

Those cheesesteaks will be the death of me :(

Hey guys,

Since you've already decided I thought I should ask you - I've got my interview coming up in two weeks and I was just wondering if you guys could shed some light on your interview questions and exactly what it was about Penn that made you want to go there (specifics about the program?) . . .

Thanks :)

Hi! You should check the interview feedback section. I found it really helpful for my interviews in general...and I posted feedback about my Penn interview on there too, so definitely check it out!

Informal poll to all the people starting at Penn this year,

what are you looking forward to the most?
