University of California San Francisco Application Thread

You're correct about having a bachelors by the time of matriculation. Well, they don't send out interview invites before the November deadline. My point was that sending in your application early to UCSF does not mean you have a higher chance of an interview invite.

Even though i will be earning my bachelor degree by may of next year the majority of my units are community college transfer credits. Ive got mostly As in my community college classes. will having a high GPA from cc units hurt my chances at UCSF?

For the record, I finished my supplemental the day before the deadline, and still got in :) It definitely was the hardest for me to trust in myself and just let it GO! lol

me too....I didn't find anything in regard to STATS....in fact I didn't see a lot of threads for UCSF at all

I got in with a 3.45 GPA from a UC (3.35 science). I did have a few Cs, but I never failed any classes. I worked at a pharmacy for 2 years as a tech and got my bachelors. Like others have said, UCSF does not look solely at numbers, which is nice because they give some pretty amazing people a chance (unlike other schools that reject you without looking at anything else past your GPA. boooo.) :)

For the coursework section on page c, do we list grade or GPA? My school awards gpa should i convert that to a grade like PharmCAS does?

Also, I am uncertain which to select on whether i "plan to get a BA" or " I do not plan to get a degree.." The problem for me is, technically I could get my degree, if I find out early that I have gotten accepted I can drop the other preqs for other schools and just finish ucsf and get my degree by the end of summer quarter...if I don't hear back until late... then I am assuming I probably may not get in and will rather take the courses to satisfy other schools. What Should I select?? And if I choose that "I plan to get a BA" and find out I was accepted really late in the year...then I wouldn't be able to finish the degree as i had planned, would they withdraw acceptance??

It is a possibility.

Hi Everyone,
I'm pretty much finished working on my UCSF supplemental essay questions, and I was wondering if there is any source I can go to in order to have them read and get some feedback. Any information will be greatly appreciated!

Hey Everyone,

I am wrapping up my UCSF supplemental application and I was wondering if there is any source on SDN we can go to in order to get some feedback on or responses?? I do remember seeing something like it a few months back, but I can't find anything now. Thanks in advance!

If you're looking for feedback on your personal statements on the supp, we have a thread for that. :)

Hi all!

I just went through the supplemental essay prompts and figured out how many characters are allotted for each box and thought I would share. :) I don't want to type my essays directly into the pdf(especially since you can't save ), so I plan on composing mine in Word and thought that other people might want to know the max. # of characters so here they are:

B1(Leadership): 1932 characters
B2(Issues of diversity): 1512 characters
B3(Human condition): 1680 characters
B5(Uniqueness): 3444 characters

Hope those are helpful and good luck to everyone! I'm going to start working on this supp. soon and I'm both excited and terrified.

Just FYI: the character count is very approximate because it's not fixed width characters.

You could type into the PDF and just copy it out into Word if you don't have Acrobat.

You better start soon with less than 1 mo. left!! :luck:

i know this might sound like a stupid question but how important are the essays in comparison to the extracurricular activities, recommendations, grades, etc.?

I feel its like a writing contest to get the interview, even though my activites, recommendations, grades are pretty good.

Any thoughts, im giving a lot of time to this essay.

Focus on the essay. Your grades, recommendations, and extra-curricular activities are set at this point. You've had 3 yrs to do all of that.
If any of the three elements you mentioned is lacking be sure to make it very clear. I did it indirectly since the essay questions do not ask directly.

When you write the essay just make sure you are honest and can back up what you claim. This is very important for your interview.

If you're currently in school, I would recommend the writing/tutoring center and the health-advising center by the advisors. I know for my undergrad, I can still use certain resources after graduation so I went to my health advisor and she gave me feedback. I also had a writing specialist/tutor help me with the grammar as well.

This is sort of a random question, but does anyone know if they read your supplemental essays in the order on the form?

I sort of want to reference something from the UCSF Candidate's Statement in my essay on the human condition, but I'm afraid it will be confusing.

Hey bruin,
At the supplemental workshop, Joel mentioned that it is totally fine to reference one essay to another.

Thank God! I finally finish this application. I wonder how applicants are chosen for an interview.

Me too! I can safely say I now know more about myself than I did before doing the app. Are you mailing it in tomorrow? This may be an obvious question, but we can mail it in on Nov. 1st right?

(look for the word postmarked)

According to the UCSF site, the answer is yes

i talked to joel and he said to play it safe send it out on November 1 first class mail and get a receipt so you have proof that you mailed it out on November 1.

Good luck with the rest of your apps unless if this is your only one.

Seriously! It is safer if you mail it it by today because it has to be stamped before Nov. 1st. Mailing it exactly on Nov. 1st might be late unless you send it through priority mail.

 This is exactly what I meant. I didn't see your post hehe.

FINALLY mailed out my supplemental yesterday!! I was so relieved/nervous when I mailed it out. I kept worrying that I had made some stupid little mistake somewhere :p
Wow what an intense application. Definitely the most challenging prompts out of all the schools. They really made me think about what I gained from each experience. Hopefully, I'll be able to write all the other bajillion supplemental essays I have left much more quickly. :)
Good luck to everyone on the rest of your apps! If we could get through this one, we can get through any supplemental that any other school throws at us!
Christmas this year is either going to be very happy or very sad.

Just got an e-mail from UCSF confirming that my application is complete and under review! Whew! I didn't think they would get back to me so fast :)

Now the waiting begins...:xf:

Same here! Relieved that everything was ok. Just have to say, Joel is super fantastic. Hopefully we all get interviews!

Did you guys submit on Nov 1st? I got a letter in the mail today saying that my application will be reviewed if everything was submitted. Hmm...

Hey! I submitted on 11/1. All I got was an e-mail saying that they received my supplemental application and that all the required materials are present... I'm sure you will get a similar e-mail soon! :)

Awww. Thanks. Did they say when the interview invites will go out? I'd love to go to UCSF.

Yup.. I hope I get an interview invite. They said they are supposed to go out late December to early January, and that all applicants should know their status by the end of January. Good luck! :)

Yeah hopefully we all get interview invites......I worked on the supplemental application all summer and submitted it at the end of September so hopefully my responses show that I put a lot of thought into them.....so now the waiting game continues......Good luck everyone!!!!

Did anyone not get a confirmation email yet? im worried now :-(

Are you sure pharmCAS has sent your application yet? It takes a while for them to compile everything and mail it out.

My PharmCAS was mailed 10/25.

my pharmcas wasn't mailed out till yesterday, that's probably why. thanks though!

Awww. Thanks. Did they say when the interview invites will go out? I'd love to go to UCSF.

Good luck everyone! For the past two years majority of people received their interview invites right before Christmas.

Yeah, I mailed my app around Oct 14th and got an email confirmation on the 22nd. Maybe there were just a lot of applications submitted near the deadline so its taking them longer to send out confirmations now.

I would call and ask them about it since jillybeeean turned it in later and already got the confirmation.

hmm. i just checked their website again and they said it could take up to one month before you get any notifications. is there anyone else who didn't receive anything?

I also sent in my supp app on one of the last days (oct 29th) and I got a confirmation on Nov 10th. I don't think you should worry..I'm sure you will get it soon as long as you know for sure that they received your app. Did you get a return receipt when you mailed it out?

I am waiting for an email confirmation, too.
PharmCAS submitted on 10/17. They just mailed out to all my schools on 11/8
UCSF Suppl. sent on 10/22... still waiting and checking emails daily.

According to Joel's blog in 2009, "The closer it is to the deadline (November 2) -- before AND after -- the longer it takes us to process applications -- because of the shear volume of mail. Your application is not the only application that we are processing. =)"

http://pharmdadmissions.ucsf.edu/se...d-max=2010-01-01T00:00:00-08:00&max-results=8

Hopefully, we will hear from UCSF soon. Good luck everyone!

yeah getting a little worried but I'll wait a little longer. the UCSF site says specifically not to call them about application status so hopefully the e-mail will come soon.

Good luck everyone! For the past two years majority of people received their interview invites right before Christmas.

Now that would be a good Christmas present !!!!

Did anyone get interview invites from UCSF???
I turned in my application in July, but haven't heard anything yet.

They don't sent their invites out until the end of December.

trying to revive this thread. anyone receive anything from ucsf now that it is mid-december? I am kind of worried about pre-reqs, how to finish them if I don't know which school I am going to.

any speculation on what kind of applicants they are looking for?

They usually arrive around Christmas (late december). Don't think too much about what they're looking for, just be you.
