~*UCSD Class Of 2012*~

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I agree. Anyone who's going for sure want to start one? I'm still undecided.

I'm sure someone will make it after second look weekend :D

Hey guys!
So I'm fairly certain that I'm going to UCSD next year! We're going to have an awesome 4 years in La Jolla! :D:)

I'm going to try and come to 2nd look weekend, but it's not looking good. Hopefully we can all get together in the summer sometime.

And I found a Facebook group for the class of 2012, but no one's joined.

UCSD finally sent the formal letter on 2nd look weekend

Yup, and I RSVPed! Looking forward to meeting you all :)

Hey guys, it's been a while since I last wrote something here but let me tell you all that I am definitely going to UCSD and I am very excited to meet all of you in a few weeks. So see you there.

Saweet. Looking forward to meeting you all. :) I'm arriving rather early... getting into the airport around 1:30. Not sure what I'm going to do before the beach party... Check out downtown San Diego, perhaps? Or maybe sit in class...

if you haven't done it yet, don't forget fin aid stuff is due in a couple weeks!

gosh dang fasfa... I already know what it's going to look like:

"The government laughs at your pitiful attempt to prove to them that your parents actually doesn't earn as much as they think after factoring in the high cost of living of california."

private loans here I come

So when are people planning on arriving in SD for second look, and what plans do you guys have?

As I said a few posts ago, I'm arriving around 1:30 and am not sure what I'm going to do before the beach party. I haven't decided if I'm renting a car... if I do, I may drive around and check out the area and downtown. If not, maybe there'll be a class for me to sit in on or something. I'm leaving Saturday evening.

Hey everybody! I'm looking forward to the fun, too! Beach party sounds fun, and the teaching rounds sounded like a cool opportunity to meet some of our future teachers. I've never done the facebook thing, and I'm a little freaky about anonymity on the web, but I'm thinking about it. I'll definitely be checking out everyone else's profile...kind of voyeuristic, I guess...

I'm staying the whole weekend in Del Mar (just up the I-5 about 3 miles from La Jolla.)

I'm waiting to hear about fin aid, too. Grad Plus is inevitable, I guess, but it's better than private alternative.

Anyone else getting nervous/excited about next year? I want to take a huge deep breath this summer before I take the big plunge!!!

Looking forward to meeting all of you. It's gonna be great to be in a group of people that have the same goals and aspirations. I have family in San Diego, but I don't really have any friends down there, so hopefully some of us can hook up to go play pool now and then. There's a great place downtown called Dussini's that has a Mediterranean restaurant with a bar/pool tables upstairs. It's very classy, and I love to go there when I'm in SD. I don't drink, but I'd be happy to be the designated driver for anyone relatively sane who is over 21!:laugh::laugh:

See you guys soon!

UCSD was my undergrad so I've kind of gotten to know the area a bit in my 4-5 years here. I could offer some suggestions if you guys are looking for a good place to eat (seafood, asian, spicy, 24hours mexican, steak, healthy, buffet, high class, etc.) on the day you come. If medschool is anything like undergrad you will be eating quite often at some of the late night asian or mexican restaurants

Hey everyone, I just wanted to encourage all those lurkers out there to join and start writing because I know that there are way more than 5 of us that visit this thread.

Like I've said before (or at least I think I have) I am extremely excited to get to know all of you. My plan is to arrive on Thursday afternoon so I am definitely willing to do something on Thursday night/Friday afternoon with all of those who are planning on getting there early. Otherwise I shall see you guys at the beach.

Also, just like Corker, I do want to take a break this summer in order to get ready for the action. I will be in San Diego at that point so I'm down to do something every once in a while (see suggestions by Corker).

Take care and see you all soon.

hey everyone! i finally registered for sdn and this is my very first post! haha. anyway i wanted to say hi- i just decided for sure yesterday that UCSD will be the place for me. i unfortunately can't make it out to 2nd look weekend (i'm living in europe now and it's too far/$$$ of a trip for only a couple of days) but i can't wait to meet everyone in the fall!

A little over a week until Second Look!

Have you guys gotten student host info yet? I'm starting to get concerned about transport and living arrangements...

I was looking at the UCSD health plan (SHIP) and it doesn't look unreasonable. However, to cover spouses and children (DSHIP), it is pretty exorbitant (5600/yr extra). Are there any current students who have thoughts/recommendations about insuring families? Any other Class-of-2012-ers have any thoughts?

in regards to the Q about insurance, one can consider using DSHIP, or having all UCSD-related health insurance waived and going with your spouse's coverage from work, if that is an option. Unfortunately, as occurs in most occupational situations, the institution does not subsidize dependents as much as it does for those enrolled. having said that, you do get access to UCSD physicians through student health (i.e. the student health MDs are clinical professors usually, and they often refer to UCSD MDs when specialist care is needed).

Hey folks....

Driving down from LA for second look sometime Friday. If you need a ride to SD or need to get from the airport to UCSD, let me know and maybe I can help.

Any word on our hosts or who we are staying with...seems almost too close for us to know nothing?

Anyone else get the '1-3 year' wait-list for student housing.....I know I did.

I PMed you about this.

Anyone know what the parking situation will be like? I am considering renting a car, but I don't know if that'll end up being a pain in the ***...

Parking shouldn't be much of a problem from what I know. Even though I don't know what beach we are going to, usually there's always a place to park when it's late in the day.
As for UCSD, from what I gathered from Brian's email the parking is free over the weekend.
Your only problem might be on Friday after the beach when we have the event on campus. I think you might have to pay for parking then.

Parking is free on the weekend, so it should be no problem Sat. There are a bunch of metered spots (not enforced on weekends) near BSB and MTF, as well as two permit lots (no permit needed on weekends) right near by. On friday, the meters are in effect until 11pm - and they do enforce them. You probably would have to pay for a daily parking pass. I'm not sure how much they run, but I think they're available at the information booth on Gilman drive as you enter the campus.

The permits are six dollars and you can use cash or a credit card in the machine. The booth looks like a little security building on the right as you enter on Gilman. The permits are "self-serve."

No matter which beach we go to it will be fairly crowded on a friday afternoon in terms of parking. I'm sure we would have to all meet at UCSD and carpool will be arrange from there (that seems to be the most reasonable solution). But if not, we should organize carpools of our own.

We definitely need to carpool. What I meant was that it should be fairly easy to find parking for one car near the beach (unless we go to PB). However, if we take about 15 cars then that's a different story.
I would think that UCSD would give some money to the people who are hosting so that they can park in a lot near the beach if they need to (obviously I have no idea if this is the case).

Oh, and I'm willing to arrange a carpool

UCSD also may have vans or other shuttles to transport us to and from the beach dinner.

Sweet - thanks to everyone for the info about parking! I think that, since I'm arriving somewhat early on Friday, I'm going to drive around and check out the area... time to look up rental car costs. Probably going to be nasty since I'm under 25...

That's giving UCSD a little too much credit :D (sry still got a little undergrad bitterness left haha).

by the way, is your name supposed to be amped as in excited? or AM Ped as in a morning pediatrician?

Its an inside (and nerdy) joke that plays on amped (as in excited)

Hey, did you guys get the email about going out after the beach party? What do you think?

Nope....apparently UCSD already does not love me

Maybe I should bring my tent down just in case I don't get a student host too! Actually it would be pretty awesome to stay the night down there on that beach :D

Hey, did you guys get the email about going out after the beach party? What do you think?
I said yes, as long as I can bail whenever I want to =p I really want to get to know people and have fun, but I'm really not a bar/party type of person.

It's going to cost me about $33/day to rent a car, which I think is not worth it. :( I may call up my cousin at UCSD to see if he can pick me up from the airport and then try to meet up with any of you who are arriving early. If that doesn't work out, Monkey House, I may need a ride from you... We'll see after we get an email from Brian regarding public transportation.

By the way, I got the email about the parties from the med student who's been in contact with me since my acceptance. So, Monkey House, your med student is probably running a little behind.

Anxious to find out who my host is... and to meet you all! Hey, can we make a list of who's going and who's arriving when?

Attending Second Look
silverlining1 - flying in around 1:30pm

Hmm... I wonder if our hosts will be able to provide transportation to/from the beach. Where is the host info? :(

EDIT: I reread a previous email and saw that we were asked if we needed transportation to the beach... I indicated yes, but haven't gotten more info yet. Also, I guess the host info is coming tomorrow at the latest...

Hey dasudaman, I work over at the VA. Mind if I catch a ride with you when you get off work? My girl might be borrowing my car that afternoon.

Anyone going to Jack's afterwards? I'm still undecided...

Yeah that's cool. I can take 4 total, so anyone else wanting a ride PM me. I'm not going to Jack's though and I need to leave the beach at 7:30pm.
