I will be going to TUSPM in the Fall. Do any current students have tips on not getting sick? I know that in college whenever I got sick I would have no motivation to do work and would fall behind. Do any of those powder vitamin supplements work (Airborne, Emrgen-C, etc)?

Save your money on Airborne and similar products. Take your Flinstone vitamins daily and remember that the most important thing you can do to keep yourself healthy in the future, and your patients healthy in the future is to WASH YOUR HANDS regularly.

And of course I'm sure you know not to share drinks or other food items. But unproven remedies such as Airborne (which lost a lawsuit for it's claims) are not a wise way to spend your money.

Simply practice good hygiene, eat well and don't burn the candle at both ends. You're an adult, and in professional school and in the real world you're going to have to be able to get your work done even if and when you're feeling a little under the weather.

I believe in taking care of myself and a balanced diet and rigorous exercise routine. In the morning if my face is a little puffy I'll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

I love Phil Collins.

The key to good health is getting your sleep and having an outlet to keep you sane (a hobby or physical activity).

Which is easy to do if you keep up with your work. (easier said than done)

If you have any more Q's about TUSPM, let me know.

cheers,

I went to American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management round table discussion and the one thing that most of these amazing Podiatrists wished they would have done differently in POD school was to DRINK MORE WATER. I always have my water bottle with me and that is usually all I drink. You know what you need to do to stay healthy. Eat well, Sleep well, and exercise.
Eat Well- I would suggest getting a nice little cooler so you can bring your own lunch to school. This will save you money and calories. Don't rely on the food court or nearby fast food restaurants. (It does help that I have a wife who makes me dinners so I have left overs to bring to school the next day).
Sleep well- figure out how much sleep you need to function well. I don't stay up past midnight and arrive at school at 7:30 everyday. many students I know waste too much time at night watching TV, surfing the web, and other things that should not take precedence over sleep.
Exercise- Plan time in your day for some exercise. I have a problem focusing if I dont exercise. It helps me to sit for longer periods of time and focus longer.

If you do these things, you should be healthy and focused. You shouldn't need stimulants or focus drugs or any bogus supplements like airborne (Unless you have a problem). The hand washing thing is a great idea. I use hand sanitizer before I eat snacks after working on the computer or cell phone...or other such foamites.
The problem: if you fall behind in your studies, one of the 3 things mentioned will be replaced by studying. You will need extra time to cram for a midterm you are not prepared for and you don't exercise, dont sleep, and eat doughnuts and guzzle coffee. Your health will take a dive. So....stay on top of studying and stick to a schedule.

You can try meditation. I just started doing it, and my overall disposition seems to be much better.

Really? Was the topic of focus hydration or something? I mean water is good and all, but... I don't know....
"Hey Steve, anything you wish you would have done differently in podiatry school?"
"Well Bob...*teary eyed*...I wish I would have drank more water."

Eat Well
Sleep well
Exercise
Definitely.

Are you serious? The balanced diet and exercise are certainly great, but I'm not sure how that facial routine helps you stay healthy, but you sure must look pretty!

I guess it would be safe to say you're not a member of a motorcycle club, 'cause I don't know where you'd put all those "products" on a road trip, nor do I think the guys would understand.

hahahaha! PADPM he is quoting a lines from the movie American Psycho where Christian Bale gives a narrative describing his daily routine. Bale plays a serial killing yuppy from the 80's in this movie.

He got me on that one.....my bad. That's pretty funny.

 Love it. NICE reference sir.

Hello arez, since you say you're going to TUSPM, I may as well be more specific in suggestions and tell you to join Rikhil's fight club ;)

I tell u what I do since I'm in TUSPM c/o 2013, the TUSPM gym is dinky but it does the job with all the weights you need for lifting, they got 2 treadmills, 1 eliptical, 2 stationary bikes and i think there's more coming in soon. There's a Ben Franklin park (about 2x2 blocks area) a block from campus that's pretty safe for you to run alone at night and is nice to jog around. The bridge to NJ is only a block from that park (about 3 blocks off campus) and you can run across the bridge then back. Sometimes I like to jog to the Rocky Steps and amuse myself by looking at the tourists taking pics as I run up the steps.

I know when I'm about to get sick, and when that happens, I ball up on clothing to keep super-warm and take a multi-vitamin, that usually does the trick. Also, being chinese and the son of acupunturists, I have a medicine box of supplemental pills to aid in cold/fever recovery. I take those when the multivitamin isn't doing the trick.

Wow. Since everyone on here knows that God will create all future Pod schools in DMU's image, let me tell you about DMU's gym. Roughly 8 treadmills, 12 elipticals, 8 stationary bikes, a 1/8 mile track, a full length basketball court, a yoga/class exercise room, 6 basketball hoops, any weight you need. Best part is all exercise machines have their own TV with 40 or so channels.

HA, exercise room???????

You guys are DEFINITELY prima-donnas. When I went to school, I'll tell you the "exercise room" we had.

It was called the staircase!!! The only form of exercise we were offered was to take the staircase instead of the elevator. Times have certainly changed.

Half of my studio apartment was weight equipment to stay in shape, because the school offered nothing. My weight bench was my living room sofa as well as my towel rack, clothes rack.........

Glad I didn't go to DMU. With their full length gym, I wouldn't have made it through year one.

I personally don't think that gyms are needed. (except for swimming pools) Why use the treadmill when you can just run outside on scenic trails or just around the concrete jungle if you live in a more urban area. Weights aren't absolutely necessary--calisthetics and pushups are fine.

Right, and giant palm leaves can be used to collect rain water, and grubs are a great source of protein. And wow, you sure are an aristocrat---too good to swim in a lake or stream?? and those asics in your avatar--don't want your feet to get dirty?? Say hi to Wilson for me.

So you're making fun of me for being resourceful and anti-materialistic? Whah?

Is Wilson more blue collar?
He is a volleyball.

Asics aren't crazy expensive? 100 bucks for shoes?? That could feed a family for a year in certain regions. Try telling someone in "one of the poorest countries of the western hemisphere" all of this.

The best tip is to get P90X...After 90 days you are guaranteed to be the most ripped podiatry student at your school.

Congratulations Dr. Teresa.

Dude, I wrote that I buy "100 dollar shoes" for "50 bucks". I shop at Marshalls, TJ MAX, and other discount stores. Actually, I haven't bought new clothes in a while since I wear t-shirts from 6 years ago. I haven't had a haircut in 6 years; I just shave it off with a haircutter. I take military 2 minute showers (wet, lather, rinse) to conserve water for the environment.

How much do you spend on shoes? Let's look at the whole picture, how much do you spend monthly? I live on 500 dollars a month in a relatively expensive area all inclusive. Rent, food, electricity, water, everything.

Let me guess...Do drive a hybrid and love the smell of your own farts? I'll bet you do!

chinocochino said:
No, I don't have a car. Why drive a hybrid (shipping incredibly complex batteries across the ocean from country to country) when you can use public transportation, bike, or your feet?

I wasn't trying to brag or anything, the other guy just kept on saying that 50 dollar shoes were too expensive. Maybe its better to not save and just buy whatever you want, not preparing for retirement and hoping for somebody to bail you out.

ochocinco,
you still don't get it? Everyone is starting to gang up on you because you came on with this holier-than-thou attitude and failed to realize that the previous responses to your posts were nothing more than jokes (albeit at your expense). You should quit while you are ahead...or slightly behind. Nobody ACTUALLY cares about your shoes, car, living situation, smelly farts, etc. You can go back to your DO forums now. And good luck this week on Dancing With the Stars...

Podiatry Health Secrets I have learned (the hard way) 1.) Take B-Vitamins around exam time and after drinking on the weekend. Helps you deal with the effects of stress and keep your skin from turning into an acne stress volcano mess. 2.) Fish Oil... 1000mg per day. Helps with stress, skin, cardio, weight gain... a mixed bag of benefits. It's been a life saver for me. 3.) Sleep. Stay on a schedule. No late night study binge sessions. No all nighters. If you can't sleep before big exams take an ambien at midnight. If you try and "tough it out" it WILL beat you down. 4.) Exercise... yeah I been meaning to do this. So far I haven't but im sure it would help. LOL

I did P13X. Had to stop after the 13th day because I pulled a muscle in my back when doing a weird "air guitar strum maneuver" from the plyometrics video.

I know exactly which one you are talking about..its not an easy move.. i made it to day 30 something...then it got boring.. trying insanity now

C'mon kids! what's with this PX90 and Insanity crap? Whatever happened to just hitting the weight room like a beast and jogging/ playing basketball/ etc. on your off days? It's pretty simple and I guarantee you will get stronger/bigger/more toned lifting weights rather then doing only body weight exercises/ plyometrics.

PX90 and Insanity are basically Richard Simmons "sweating to the oldies" on crack. It's kind of un-safe as well, as someone else has already alluded to. Going from being in-active to doing explosive plyometric training is not the best idea nor is the correct protocol when athletes are in the beginning stages of plyometric training. What does Joe or Jane Doe think they are going to accomplish by attempting such a routine?

I may be wrong.. but i am pretty sure those programs were designed for people who were already physically fit, but just wanted to take their cardio/strength training to a higher level. i dont think it was intended for the person who is 30 lbs overweight and hasnt seen the inside of a gym in two years to try, only to end up banging up their joints and failing in the long run.

I'm on week 7 of p90X and this definitely is no joke or gimmick. The program isn't only body weight exercises and plyo. You do a lot of pushups and pullups but also use a good amount of free weights. Also, as far as the plyo goes, that is prob the best cardio workout I have ever done. I hate running, and this makes cardio bearable for me. As long as people know their limitations and don't overdue anything, people will def see great results. Jesus Christ, I feel like a salesman for this....but it does work!

Don't knock it till you try it. I got my BS degree in Exercise Science and learned a few things about sports nutrition and exercising. Although I had the knowledge of how I should workout and what foods to eat, I never did it. I needed the motivation to workout regularly. Tony on P90X provided that for me and is working so far. The workouts are killer and I don't buy their recovery drinks, I just drink chocolate mile or eat a meal. I do get plenty of protein in my diet.
At the beginning of the program you can't do everyone of the exercises and reps he does, but you build up to it. The Plyo video is hard and I limit myself to prevent injury. I am not a salesman either but I have friends and family members that have seen great results.

Wow, you have BS in ESS? So do I! AND I am a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA)...you have that certification?

Is name dropping degrees suppose to give you any kind of legitimacy here? This is almost as bad as PADPM, Podfather, and DiabeticfootDr bickering over different board certifications.

I only see PX90 and Insanity as high intensity cardio workouts with a sprinkle of assorted body weight exercises for the upper body such as pushups and pullups (maybe there are some bicep curls with weights too?).

Ultimately, the only thing that will happen is that you will lose weight...period. There is no way you are going to pack on a significant amount of lean muscle like you would from a traditional weightlifting routine (benching, deadlifts, sqauts, overhead presses).

You would have to be pretty out of shape to see significant growth from the PX90. But again I wouldn't give PX90 much credit if this were to happen because any kind of stimulus will ultimately incur improved body composition in a de-trained individual.

You can get just as shredded from doing a traditional weightlifting routine. Just eat a clean diet and do some cardio.

Had to laugh at that as I've been following their **** slinging match as well.

I agree with studywithfury. P90X isn't a magic pill like some make it out to be. It's just another workout video that actually incorporates decent work outs. Not that richard simmons and tai bo crap. The main reason why people are getting good results is that it's always easier to keep up with someone else's routine than making your own and sticking to it. It's always easier to pop in a video and do that than to go to the gym and do it by yourself.

Sorry studywithfury...I didnt mean to degree drop, just wanted to point out that i have some knowledge about exercise and wasn't doing what I learned. i needed motivation and someone to make the workouts for me because I am busy with boards and school. it is easy to follow and saves me time. I am not trying to get big, I am just trying to lose weight and get a little more tone. After the program I will write my own program after the boards. I know it is not a pill. Just saying it is an easy program to follow. I am not the strongest guy but play sports year round. I am not certified in all that you are, but if I was I am sure I would be able to make a sweet workout program.
Maybe you can write a workout program for all the podiatry students and share your tips with us. Start a new thread and help us out.

I don't know about Insanity, but P90X def isn't a high intensity cardio workout with a sprinkle of assorted body weight exercises. The program is 6 days a week. 2 days are dedicated to cardio (plyometrics and kenpo which is kind of like tae bo). 3 days are dedicated only to strength training with little to no cardio involved. During the strength training days, you are doing exercises such as overhead dumbbell presses, lateral raises, dumbell rows, a variety of dumbbell curls, tri extensions, pushups, pullups, etc...Obviously if you are going for massive size than the gym is the place to be. If someone is looking for an alternative to the gym than this program does work and WILL put on lean muscle, not just make you burn fat.

I havent really come across too much upper body conditioning so far with Insanity. I am not trying to get ripped or gain a huge amount of muscle mass in 60 days.. i am only trying to lose weight and get my cardio and endurance up for the biking and swimming I normally do during the summer. All i can say is that in three weeks in i have lost like 7.55 inches total and i didn't even know that I had that much to lose.

Another thing about doing these excercise videos is that it allows you to be flexible with your workout time. It is not really safe (at least for women) to be jogging at night by themselves, and most gyms close before I have time to work out. So I guess its all about preference. If i can work out at home and not have to take the time to drive to the gym, then that saves me time for studying and other things.

does anyone know what the recreational facilities are like at Barry?

The facilities are pretty nice. They have 2 basketball courts, pingpong tables, and soccer/intramural fields. Weight room has everything you need. free weights, machines, treadmills, ellipticals, punching bag area, bikes, stretching/yoga area. Weight room has a few showers and lockers. Most students hit the weight room until the first round of tests come up, then most stop going.
Intramural sports they offer are flag football, soccer, and basketball. There are many ways to stay fit in Florida year round. I used to make fun of people who rollerblade, but I bought some and do it quite a bit near the beaches and around a golf course.

how does one get involved in the intramural sports? just show up?
i have a friend in med school and they meet for soccer every wednesday. its nothing too serious, but it keeps them active and sane.

and yes there are tons of athletic activities to do in fl, the only down side is that it gets sooooo hot during the summer. SO hot. but i've heard there is at least breeze that comes in off the ocean down there. so i guess that would help.

Nice one! You got me there. I said the same thing to the rollerbladers growing up because I was the cool "skateboarder," but things are different when you are old and married. I never thought I would ever own a minivan but when you start popping out those babies, minivans are very convenient. I don't own one yet, but one baby away till the big purchase. Can you back me up, my friend from a pod school out west (I forgot your screen name)?

Googlymello...To get involved with intramurals, you just make a team (usually each Pod class has their own team) and its free to students. The competition out here is pretty good for all 3 intramural sports.. The Pod teams (my class especially) do quite well. Summers are hot, but a nearby country club gives you a great deal for golf...For under $30 you get unlimited golf after 11 am, free lunch, 2 for 1 beers, large bucket of balls, and a cart. It's a steal but it is really humid and hot. After boards I will be there quite a bit.

Well, I hear you with the minivan. The first time I thought "Yeah, a minivan would pretty nice for driving the kids around in" was a very sad day for me:laugh:! Still don't have one, but like you, just one kid away from it.

OF COURSE I can back you up! I love our Toyota Sienna! We had a Jeep Grand CHerokee that cost more in repairs and upkeep than it did buying it. If you are buying a minivan (make sure to get a V6 instead of a V4), you can still keep your manliness if you pimp it out with some automatic doors, and a batman-like bug deflector on the hood! VEWY NIIICE! Also, Paulywog isn't Indian. :D

I have to ask, where did you get the idea to do all this stuff?
BTW, I figured you were a guy when you stated you can do 1000 crunches. I just find it humorous guys share that info, but a female would just say I do stomach crunches.
