Stop thinking about the present and think about the future......

Oh and screw all the responsible people

Honest question -- were you this frustrated when the banks got bailed out in '08 due to their recklessness?

Another question - if they allowed everyone that paid federal loans to deduct that amount in tax credits from 401k withdrawals in the future, would you consider that a satisfactory compromise?

And a question for the Bernie Bots - shouldn't we first address the root cause of expensive student loans first? Doesn't it seem ridiculous to forgive student loans when every year more and more people continue to accrue loan balances?

Oh and screw all the responsible people

I can understand people that actually paid their loans themselves, but the video above is different. Why should the child of parent one be saddled with loans because their parent is an idiot and they weren't lucky enough to be the offspring of parent two, the more responsible one?

The only logical response would be "Well, life isn't fair." Upon which the liberals will say "Exactly. So let's just forgive they loans."

Both sides are dancing around the 500 lbs elephants in the room. People should have the right to an affordable college education. People should have compulsory financial management education in public schools. We are failing miserably on a societal level.

If student loans will get repaid by government, isn't it a big incentive for colleges to keep jacking up tuition and for students to go to the most expensive institutions? Are the left exacerbating the problem?

If the left keeps pull this kind of BS off, I have a feeling that we might get another republican president in the white house in 2024, well, unless Trump messes it all up and stock market crashes somehow.

Agree! This will leave the gov with a huge budget hole of around 1.6 tril. How will they get them back to be able to continue goverment funded program? Tax the **** out of you and privately own companies that keeps this country going. That’s my speculation

When Bernie looks up to the Scandinavia for healthcare and education, I think he should also looks up their youth unemployment numbers. They have freaking 20% youth unemployment, compared to US at only 8%.

What's the freaking point of going to college and can't get a job? I think it's just a scam for left-wing professors teaching useless bullsh*t to keep getting their fat paycheck when they see their school enrollment numbers are down, so they want government to use taxpayers' money to pay them instead. Simply sick and disgusting.

They should forget trying to forgive the debt and just make the interest rate 0% on education debt. That would be a logical thing to do.

You are not a child when you are 18. You are an adult. You can sign up to go to war. You can get a credit card, auto loan. Should those debt also be forgiven?

Keep in mind, the majority of debt is own by a household with a graduate degree so these loans were taken after they have earned a bachelor degree. For many, it is a financial smart decision to go to graduate school because it increases their earning potential. I had a six figures student loan and I paid it off within a few years. It wasn't even difficult. So far, I have made well over $1.5M working as a pharmacist. Why should people like myself receive loan forgiveness? Doesn't make any sense.

Besides increasing everyone's income tax, those countries also has a value added tax (VAT). More importantly, their government knows how to run a country. We, on the other hand, elect slick talking lawyers to run our country. We can't even keep our streets clean.

Yes I hate all bailouts.

If we get a refund for all the tuition that we paid then it would be fair. But of course no one cares if you responsibly paid your loans.

Loan forgiveness would incentivize schools to jack up their tuition rates and students to stay in school longer, while you the hard working class takes a big blow by paying for their education. OK, so you think you're doing good for society by paying more tax for kids to go to school. Too bad though, for the most part, school is a scam, how much of it do you actually use in the real world after paying thousand of dollars?

Someone did a survey on the street of copenhagen and found out most danish girls want to come to america actually.
In Denmark, doctors and plumbers make roughly the same after tax, so who wants to stay in a country like that?

Yea - I agree with this. Include a regulation on tuition and I think this is reasonable.

I do not think there should be a bail out ever. There's a reason we are always in a bubble. The government needs to stay out of everything.

The US would be in a way better place without the government.

So because life isn't fair, we should reward the irresponsible people?

Homogeneous. Who wanna just pay for white people not minorities. And 7 million people the size of NYC 8.6 million. Then Norway has oil and 25 percent of its retirement fund in stock exchange. With a fund manager in the background. Yupppp. Nordic captialism but do call it socalism lol

What about Sweden? Solid 20% youth unemployment rate.

Hollywood California dreaming in arts
No elites want to live in a high welfare state, which badly need them to create jobs and pay taxes to sustain its unsustainable model. Where did their elites go? US~ Maybe Bernie should do some survey and ask why scandinavians come to states instead of staying in their "perfect" world forever.

Unemployment in the US is 15%. They don't count people who have given up on looking for jobs.
Also, wait until Uber, Lyft, Grubhub, Doordash,... have self-drive cars and drones, lol

In America, doctors and plumbers make roughly the same too. The difference is plumbers have no debt and start working 8 years earlier.

You should definitely post this to the MD section and tell them to drop out of med schools and become a plumber instead LOL

Right based on?

The government should get out of the student loan business. We can all agree that student loan programs have harmed our society. We need to stop.

Government bailouts of business is a straw man argument that has now bearing on this topic.

Eh poor go to Europe and Europeans that come here wanna be more American and make money. Poor Americans go to Europe and wanna be more European. Well actually they don't wanna be European but just want the European system

Then ppl will jump to college just bc they want to borrow money to buy cars, stocks or houses.

I thought America was built upon entrepreneurship and diligence, which naturally leads to capitalism. If whoever American wants socialism, just leave for Europe plz, why staying here and trying to change the system, when Europe already has the best system in the world according to them?

It's impossible to leave for EU when you're poor and have little education!

Then they should just shut up and start working. When should the illiterate command the country as leaders?

If this is meant as satire, you killed it.
Otherwise the answer to your question is “democracy”.

Most Europeans hate America. Except half of them that open business in USA want to be more American like. In Europe only uk likes Americans. And carry themselves more like Americans

Most hate American storytelling and small talk. Usually Americans like to sell a story and vision in order to raise funds for their companies.

Correct. The Europeans you see traveling are 10 percent of their country. So are Americans though since 10 percent have passports. How you see they act is very different than seeing the people who live there

Singapore is arguably the most well managed "democratic" nation in the world, with decent amount of social welfare. Why, cuz their government is run by elites.

They can't even leave for Canada. Come on man. Immigration laws, but they do study for free in Europe then get that eu citizenship after 5 years. It helps if you are white too. Many offer to Irish and Italian eu citizenship by blood

Tiny tiny island. Don't even compare!
One person can come to work but the whole family can hardly move there.

I guess only China and Russia are comparable to US in size and population huh. Fortunately these two countries already tried socialism and communism, and their bloody lesson should be learned: any form of socialism or top-down level government control implemented in the pretext of "for the citizens" never worked and should never be tried elsewhere.

they should tax the billionaires. When all of them leave, no more socalism :D

That's fine. But how do you get an educated citizenry to compete with other countries that willfully pay for post-secondary education?

Government bailouts of business is a straw man argument that has now bearing on this topic.

Well, it wouldn't be a straw man argument because it actually happened. And I wasn't arguing for or against in that specific post, I was literally just asking a good faith question. And the poster responded that he is against all bailouts. Which is fine.
