So I have to choose between Temple and University of Delaware. I live in Philly and in state tuition at Temple is equal to the out of state tuition at Delaware (somewhere around $75000) which totally terrifies me... Cost of living is equal as I have a cheap apt in Philly and living in Newark is very cheap.

It's the programs, the actual education that happily gets to be the deciding factor and so I am very interested to hear any comments about this comparison. Thanks!

Delaware, absolutely. They're 4th ranked for a reason.

Also, I don't know if you're aware, but Delaware can be very cheap. They have a bunch of teaching assistantships and similar ways to cut down on the tuition.

I have to admit I'm a bit skeptical about those US News rankings. I'm not so sure they accurately portray the educational field as it is. Both Temple and UDel are in the top 10 - that's not bad for either so...

Is anyone reading this a current student at either school? At Temple, there is no PT clinic on campus yes? Do you think that is a significant benefit of going to Delaware because they have clinics right on campus? Also the program at Delaware is smaller - I'm not sure if this is good or bad. Obviously lower student/faculty ratio but perhaps being such a small cohort can be less than desirable at times.

Temple's program is 3 years, Delware's is 2.5. I'm not sure how I feel about this - perhaps taking the extra 6 months to complete the degree will make the workload more tolerable? Anyone from Delaware want to comment on the pace and workload?

Hey Redirtgirl, when was your interview at Temple? What was it like? Any interview tips, I have mine on March 27th? Thank you

My interview was 2/13. It was a "group" interview scenerio. We had some presentations and then we were split off into groups of 5 or 6 and 2 faculty members. They took us to a room and we chatted somewhat informally. It was more conversational than a corporate job interview. Everyone sort of explained why they wanted to do PT and go to Temple. We were also asked that question about if you could have any 3 people to a dinner party, who would they be, etc. Also we were asked about our "free" time - hobbies, interests etc. Just be yourself, be enthusiastic, interact with the other interviewees, respond to them, make it a conversation. Everyone was super friendly. They (some 1st years) gave us a campus tour (of relevant places) and we grilled them with questions about what it's really like to go to Temple - they were more than happy to answer.

Good luck! Where else are you looking?

Does anyone have an opinion about DELAWARE????

Just some word to the wise about temple..
I also interviewed and got in there sometime during mid feb. They were really friendly and the interview wasn't really anything scarey...just them putting a face and a personality to paper work they had in front of them. I was really interested in temple, but i did find out that they drop about 10 to 12 people after the first year and many after anatomy...which is alot. Many of the other schools i've looked into drop at most 2 or 3.. just something to keep in mind! Hope it helps to shed some light :D

What do you mean Temple drops 10-12 students? Based on student GPA or students dropping out because they don't like the program? Was this just for last year?

Thanks.

I sat in on a class the other day at Temple, just to try to help my decision making... As far as the dropping goes, this is what I heard from the students: The class is about 9 or 10 smaller than when it started. 1 dropped because they changed their minds about becoming a PT, the others were dropped because they had 3 grades below B-. Apparently, they can petition their way back in but not all make it back - like 3 or 4 do I was told.

I dunno about all this... I mean, sure - you are going to have a student here or there that just isn't cutting it but everybody stumbles sometimes. I mean, clearly you have to work hard and help yourself but once you are in one of these programs, is it really necessary to feel like you are still being weeded out? I don't want to be paranoid my entire first year - I don't anticipate failing out of grad school but who knows - maybe it's 10x harder than I think. I'm only human. Should I find that I'm having trouble, I want to feel like I can get all the help I need and not have to worry about losing my slot. If I catch up - good for me, if I don't, well, then perhaps it's time to quit. A blanket policy like this intimidates me - do they count on this type of attrition? All in all though - this isn't a major concern or deal breaker for me - I can't think like that.

I do think that Temple is an excellent program and all the students were happy to be there. The curriculum for the next class has been rearranged according to some feedback from the previous class, that is a good sign. They are starting earlier and spreading things out a bit.

However - Temple doesn't have a PT clinic on campus - they have the PT dept at the hospital across the street, but I personally feel this is a large negative for them. At Delaware, they have multiple clinics right there and all students are in those clinics a few hours a week right from the start and are supervised by clinical specialists. This is important to me since I have not been a PT aide for 2 years nor am I an ex sci/kines undergrad - I am a career changer. I think that exposure is something that I personally need. Perhaps not everyone holds this value.

I am leaning towards DE, but it is not a clear or easy choice. I also think DE has more opportunity for TA and GA jobs that will help with the cost - this is a major major factor - cost!

redirtgirl...didn't mean to worry you! Its just something I had heard about from the students when we took the tour. I asked the question directly because it was a rumor I had heard. They were very open to talking with me about it, but did admit there are about 10-12 people who end up being "dropped" per say due to academic reasons. I also felt like it was a great program and the faculty seemed awesome..but for me there's only so many students dropping that you can attribute to personal reasons or an inability to study. The one thing that might be related to dropping so many people is that their credit load is a lot larger then some of the other schools I've looked at, in a way that its just not as spread out. Like you said they are changing the curriculum, but it still seems like a relatively new system which makes me a little uneasy. Everyone seemed really happy there! Just wasn't the best fit for me. Im sorry I don't know much about DE...but this is just what I've observed about temple. Good luck with your decision....Im sure you'll make the right one! :luck:

Im currently a first year at temple.....feel free to ask me ANYTHING...i will be completely unbiased and give a true account of my experience so far. I, too, was in your position and in need of some advice on where to attend. Send me a private message or email me at [email protected]
