just in case any of you are applying to the transitional yr program at swedish covenant, here is some info i got while surfing the web

if you haven't heard, things are changing at swedish covenant for the
transitionals. i've copied a posting from "auntiminnie.com" from one of
their interns:

I am currently a transitional year resident at Swedish Covenant Hospital
in Chicago. Id like you let you know of some recent developments here.

What was once considered one of the best transitional programs in the city
has now become the worst. As some of you know, we have no call free
months but our calls came out to about q week. And despite having to do
some 12 admissions a night, they were ridiculously easy to do. All in all
this was a great program if you didnt like to follow patients or round.

Two days ago our chief resident told us that our program director, as a
consequence of our expanding hospital, decided to add an extra intern on
call every night starting in January. Mind you this is after we had
received a normal January call schedule which we had all based our plans
around. There was no advance notice, no negotiation, nothing. For the
remainder of the year, we are going to be on q4 call with no call free
months.

This post is aimed mostly at those who interviewed with us. We told all
of you (mostly rads) that this was the place to be. We no longer
recommend this program. It is of our opinion that you only rank this
program if you feel you cannot match into any other transitional year OR
preliminary medicine program. The teaching here has always been remote,
and as far as we know it doesnt get any worse than q4 call year round.
Needless to say, to those of you who are considering us in the future,
please look elsewhere.

We held a meeting today with our program director. We feel that he is
stubborn, unpredictable, and exceptionally irrational. He literally would
not listen to any of our ideas. The worst thing however, is that he
blatantly lied to us today. This is not the man you want to be working
for.

This post is not meant to enflame, tattle, or to exact revenge. It is
simply to inform. There is one less good transitional year program out
there. Tell your friends.

Good luck with everything else guys.

Interesting post. As a current transitional resident in Chicago, I might add that another program has bit the dust: mine. As of today, IL Masonic's transitional program is canceled for '03. Too bad - this is such a great, laid-back program. Looks like the pickings are gettin' slimmer for Chicago TY's...
