Ohhh yes haha I thought you recognized me by my stats lmao, that would have been crazy. That’s funny! I was also chatting with a girl before my WSU interview and it turned out that she worked at another clinic a few blocks away from mine and that she was best friends with two of my coworkers lol I hope you find the guy again! :biglove:
Oh well I knew where Snowflake Lane is! I live just a bit north.

That's awesome :D Maybe they intentionally do it geographically. I commented that I wish I knew sooner because it would've been great to carpool :coffee:

Ahh yes I kno I kno, I’ve had long extensive conversations with the vets I work with about this. I’m pretty sure I’m going to accept WSU and if for some crazy reason I get into CSU AND it’s cheaper with scholarships or something (lols who am I kidding), then I’ll have to reconsider my options. But for now, I’m gonna be a cougar! :cat:
I'm glad you have :) People are already house hunting! @CoffeeQuestionMark have you gotten the housing ads yet plus there's been FB postings on our classifides?
On a real note though the reality of said scenario happening is when pigs truly fly. I'm originally a CO resident-I'm saving 30k by coming here even after paying one year OOS in just tuition alone. Plus COL is cheaper here my same one bedroom apartment in FOCO goes for about 400 more per mo.

BTW your class FB page has already been made-idk if you all are on that yet or not

I'm not yet! How do I get in? Gosh I still have to send in the paperwork too.
My friend is 2nd year and can't wait to replace her current roommate with me so I'm good on that end :)

So I’m visiting WSU next week and want to look at housing when I’m there. Do you think they would consider giving me temporary access to the page so that I can look at some housing when there?

Overall Undergrad GPA: LOW! 2.8-3.0 I believe (I've tried to forget) I really didn't care about college my first go at it
Prerequisite GPA: 3.86-3.96 depending on the program
Last 45 GPA: 4.0

GRE (Q/V/W)-: 154/156/4.5

Veterinary Experience (Countless hours at time of submission)
Veterinary assistant at SA ER: ~7000 hours
Shadowed LA vet: ~100 hours
Practice Manager at ER/Specialty vet: ~16,640 hours - almost exclusively on the administration side, though

Extracurriculars/Awards
Chancellor's List 3x
Dean's List 3x
Volunteer baseball coach

As you might piece together on your own, all my academic awards came from when I re-enrolled in college to earn better grades/retake prerequisites which had timed-out due to my old, old age. I really didn't care about college when I was younger - I cannot overemphasize that.

Non-Animal Employment

None

LORs
Board Certified DVM dermatologist - employer
DVM/MD - employer. (no, not a typo. He really is a DVM and MD)
ER DVM - worked with as an assistant
DVM - I went out on a limb with this one as he is a very recent graduate and one of my best friends.

Given my age and time in the field I think I was at an advantage when it came to letters of recommendations as I have made so many contacts over the years. I asked veterinarians that I felt knew me best and, quite honestly, I call friends. Each person listed above kept tabs on the whole application process step-by-step and were elated at my acceptances. I waived the right to see any letter written, for what it's worth.

Essay Questions
I have an extensive background in veterinary management so I tried in my essay questions to tout that as much as possible. I wanted prospective schools to know truly how much I already know about the field in order to show them that I knew exactly what I was getting into. Veterinary medicine is so much more than simply treating patients if you wish to be successful and I tried to tie every prompt back into my experience in all the ancillaries surrounding the field.

My first go at college was less-than-notable and that really hurt me when I started the process of applying. I made sure that the schools knew I knew my early work was crap but at this point I couldn't change anything, only do my best to rectify my past academic errors. I brought it up myself at the interviews as I didn't want it to be the elephant in the room, haha. "Hi, nice to meet you, now let's talk about my academic past" was essentially how I started both interviews I attended. As backwards as it sounds, and I would not advocate anyone doing 2.0 work then 10 years later doing only 4.0 work, but I think the drastic turnaround in my grades actually might have helped me. Everyone likes a redemption story, right? I attempted in all my essays to show programs that I am not the person I was 10-12 years ago and I have veterinary medicine to thank for that - the desire to become a veterinarian truly changed my way of thinking, and now after being accepted I can say it has completely changed my life.

From my first application to my second, a lot of things changed. I made some discoveries in my application process the first time around that ruined the majority of my chances of even getting an interview. The second time around, I jumped into as much volunteering, shadowing and working as I could in order to make my application more well rounded. It was a little disappointing the second time around to get waitlisted by my IS, but I truly fell in love with Prince Edward Island (a class size of less than 70 is my dream). I was really excited to be accepted to PEI and was struggling with the idea of having to choose between my in state and PEI, but now I don't have to choose!

Things may change if I get in to Wisconsin or MN off the waitlist, but otherwise, PEI here I come!

Interviewed: ross, sgu, Minnesota, midwestern, lmu, Kansas

Rejected: Washington, Cornell, Michigan state, va-md (interview waitlisted turned rejection)

Waitlisted: Kansas(after interview), Iowa, Wisconsin

Waiting to hear: LMU

Accepted: midwestern, Minnesota, sgu, Ross

cGPA: 3.7
sGPA: 3.8
Last 45: 3.9

GRE (Q/V/A): 161/162/5.0

Vet experience: 500 hours
I had a very minimal amount of hours compared to a lot of the applicants which I felt was a definite weak point in my application. All the experience I had were in small animals/exotics and none in large animals due to the fact that there wasn’t really any large animal vets near me (perks of living in NYC) and the one I could find said it would be a liability.

Animal experience: 500 hours
All done at the animal shelter

Research: 500 hours (guess I just love the number 500)

Extracurriculars:
TA for a large biology course
Temporary job between semesters as an office administrator

EDIT: changing Michigan to Michigan state before I trigger people :p
But you forgot Washington State... and Iowa State... and Kansas State :p

Essay Questions/Personal Statement
I would say my essay questions were pretty generic, I just tried to make it very clear that I knew what I was getting into and that being a veterinarian involves spending a lot of time working with people. I also talked about how my goals in the profession involve working closely with rescues since I see a lot of value in veterinarians being associated with rescues.

I'm so happy that I'm finally accepted! I can't wait to start! :)

Essay Questions/Personal Statement
I talked about my interest in veterinary ophthalmology and how I hope that specializing will allow me to continue to work with an array of different animals vs picking SA/exotics/etc. I also made sure to mention that I understand that I have a lot to learn about all specialties and that I am excited for that. For my MN essay, I touched on how being from Puerto Rico and living in South Florida where I'm constantly surrounded by people of all races and ethnicities has opened my eyes to how important diversity is. I explained how my background and ability to speak Spanish allows my hospital and doctors to reach an additional community that might otherwise not get their pets medical attention. I also explained how my ability to relate to and communicate with people from different places helped a lot during my trip to Mexico with the rescue group from Minneapolis.

I promise I am in no way being brainwashed into saying this but seriously PSA for everyone reading this that's struggling to find hours, see if there is a Banfield near you!! I know they get a bad rep sometimes but it is truly what you make of it and comes down to each individual hospital. I learned so so so much working here without having to spending time volunteering as a kennel tech beforehand (NOT saying that's a bad thing but not everyone can work for free). I guess it depends on your state laws, but I get to administer medications/fluids, give injections and vaccines, do labs, monitor surgery, etc every single day. It's truly invaluable experience!!
I have to say, even though we’re all ending up at the same place with the same degree and whatever, I’m super jealous of everything I just read. Really impressive!

Future Career Goals: Talked about how I am interested in small animal and exotic general practice, but also find interest in equine medicine and surgery, and emphasized how I was planning on leaving my mind open to changing my interests during vet school.

Contribution to society: Listed a variety of different roles veterinarians can have, then went into the specific ones I would likely take on: medical treatment of individual animals, client education, disease treatment and prevention, and possibly diagnostic and behavioral research, as well as staying up to date on animal welfare and legislative current events.

Attributes: Academic ability/desire to learn, communication skills, adaptability, and ability to compartmentalize. I listed some others at the beginning of my response, but these are what I focused on for the attributes I possess.

Essay Questions/Personal Statement
I talked about a need for LA veterinarians to be agriculture advocates for production in animals in my essay about what I want to do as a vet. I tied it into how people I know from back home in Manhattan don't have a good understanding of the animal production industry and get a lot of their information from Facebook warriors.
My essay about veterinarian's contributions was tied into advocacy.
My attribute essay mentioned determination and humor. I spoke about how I believe humor is a good way to cheer people up in the office during tough moments.
I spoke about moving from NY to a very southern state for undergrad and getting labeled as the token Jew by people and how even though I am Jewish (and not that religious at that) I wanted to be known as more than Jewish.

To be honest, I don't think anything in my application stood out too much. I took some engineering classes and super upper level math classes before declaring my major as definitely not engineering, so that was something that might have stuck out to the admissions committees. I definitely think I shined during my interviews, except Ohio State. I blew that one and knew right away I wasn't getting accepted.

go for the cheaper schoollllllll. you'll get a great education at either school, but you'll have much less debt chained to you for the rest of your life by attending the cheaper school.

I just always felt like they never gave a crap about me when I visited the vet school and for undergrad. Literally every other school I visited gave me a vibe that "this is home and everyone feels like family", but Cornell made me feel like I was just a number. People who go there definitely don't feel that way, but it was saddening and 100% off-putting

I got accepted at Oklahoma State (IS) and Minnesota. I LOVED Minnesota and considered accepting the offer. I then calculated the price differences in tuition assuming I gained in-state residency with Minnesota my second year. There was a $68,000 difference. As much as I loved Minnesota it isn't worth $68,000 MORE than what I will accrue. If Minnesota is worth a lot more debt, by all means, but I really, really think you should consider how much debt you will have compared to your income. The national average income for a veterinarian via Google is ~$88,000.

Wait, I'm a little confused. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think one can draw comparisons between this situation (where at both options you have OOS tuition one year and then IS tuition for the next three years - there shouldn't be a huge difference) and the other (one option you have IS tuition all four years, and one option you have OOS and then IS tuition - the first one should generally be cheaper by a year's worth of school).

Unless Mizzou is just overall wayyy cheaper in both IS/OOS tuition than Minnesota - and I haven't done the numbers on this - shouldn't the price points be comparable?

It's been a while since I last looked, but I believe of all OOS tuitions (and factoring in switch to IS), Mizzou is on the cheap end of the range and Minnesota is on the more expensive end of the range, so there likely is still a price difference

Minnesota is cheaper. Minnesota is around $200,000 for tuition, all fees, etc. Missouri is around $230,000 for everything if you get residency in year 2.

Edit: never mind. I was reading it as Minnesota resident. Also I’m on mobile so the comments I meant to respond to didn’t get properly added. Idk why. Everything is a mess. Also there’s an added tuition for Minnesota summer semester year 3. It’s complicated. I was wrong.

Where tf are you getting your numbers. They are incorrect.
I edited my comment just as you commented. I thought they were talking about a Minnesota resident vs Missouri non-resident tuition.

Ah yeah nope. OOS for both. In the past UMN has allowed residency switches after the first year but supposedly is very difficult to get now.

Yea Minnesota for OOS ends up being over $330,000. Definitely a big nope

Do residency switches for Minnesota ever get grated for reasons other than parents moving or marrying a resident?

Not charging for summer between 3rd and 4th year is one of the big selling points for Illinois that our dean says to everyone. So it sounds like a majority of schools charge fr that.

Applied: Washington, Cornell, Wisconsin, SGU, Ross, Minnesota, Midwestern, LMU, VA-MD, Michigan state, Iowa, Kansas (yes it’s a lot I don’t recommend applying to this many since it was expensive but with my minimal experience and extracurriculars I didn’t know if I would be able to get in)

Interviewed: ross, sgu, Minnesota, midwestern, lmu, Kansas

Rejected: Washington, Cornell, Michigan state, va-md (interview waitlisted turned rejection)

Waitlisted: Kansas(after interview), Iowa, Wisconsin

Waiting to hear: LMU

Accepted: midwestern, Minnesota, sgu, Ross

Attending: Minnesota!

cGPA: 3.7

I tell people to remember to say Michigan State when they interview. Because calling it Michigan might trigger your interviewers.

I found that five of the seven vet schools I visited were cold. The students showing you around were nice enough and talked about the class members being close. But staff always gave me the feeling of "we don't need you, we have so many people wanting to get in."
Only Texas A&M and Mizzou made me feel like I was worth talking too.

I'm pretty sure summer semester tuition 4th year is NOT unique to Minnesota.
My saying it’s sneaky was about how it’s listed in the cost of attendance calculator. You select resident or non resident and it tells you the fall and spring tuition. Then there’s a separate line in the drop down box for summer tuition. So it was sort of hidden away.
