I am trying to figure out what subspecialty i would like to aim for as i apply for residency, but even though i have rotated with some subspecialists i really dont have a great idea of particular subspecialty lifestyles. This is my impression so far:

Peds ER: shift work, decent pay (not as much as reg ER), no outpatient / cant really have your own practice. extremely competitive.

Peds Endo: decent hours, pay not significantly more than genpeds, could have your own practice, not competitive.

Peds Cards: horrible hours, very good pay, yes outpatient / own practice, extremely competitive.

Peds Hem/Onc: decent hours? / not too many emergency calls?, pay?, yes outpt/practice, medium competitive.

Peds Nephro: ???, yes outpt / yes private practice, not competitive.

Peds GI: decent hours?, pay?, yes/yes, medium competitive.

Peds pulm: hours?, pay?, yes/yes, not competitive.

Peds Neuro: decent hours?, pay?, yes/yes, not competitive.

Peds Neonatology: decent hours, good pay, no outpt / private practice, medium competitive.

Peds ID: i doubt its decent hours considering they must be so busy, not great pay i imagine, yes/yes, not competitive.

peds allergy/imm: great hours, decent pay, yes outpt, yes private practice, extremely competitive.

Am i forgetting some (medical) subspecialty?

There are just some important criteria i came up with, but add some others if u feel they are important. Also, i was personally very interested in peds cards, but after doing ONE SubI, i am maybe rethinking the lifestyle i would like to lead, thats why id like to know more about lifestyles!!

thanks

I hope you get lots of replies as i am looking for same answers. In neonatology i think decent pay yes, hours in shifts, can do group practice, lots basic research n teaching.

Pedi ID pay is usually mid-100s....typical consultant schedule....can do some outpatient as well...can see HIV kids, for instance...
