Ok. So the IM residency is 3 yrs, and heme/onc is three years. If I want to do that, do I fully complete the IM residency, and then immediatly enter the three yr heme/onc plan? Do you still make residency wages while in the heme/onc program?

You have to fully complete three years of IM residency. You can start your fellowship immediately after that, or take a break and start later. Some folks work as hospitalists or chief residents for a year and then return to fellowship. You make slightly more than residency wages as a fellow, nothing significant. There are 2 year fellowship programs in Hematology only or Oncology only.
