In other countries, if you work as a dentist as an independent contractor, you can control when you pay yourself. So, say you earned 300k in a year before specializing, and then went and did a 3 year specialty where you won't make any money. You could use your company to pay you 100k a year over the 3 years. This allows you to pay much less in tax than you would if you earned 300k in the first year, and then 0 dollars a year for the next few years.

Is this possible to do in the US by setting yourself up as an independent contractor?

Are there any ways to set yourself up well knowing if you are about to specialise and not have any income for a few years?
