Hey Mohamed, pm me. This is a private feature in the "User CP" at the top of the page.

Actually I will do it, and respond if you can.

Sorry Mo007 I dont know how to use that feature as you can tell I'm new to this forum, if you would like I can give u my e-mail address ?.

That sounds great. Post your email, and we pick it up from there.

Actually, it is better to NOT post e-mails on the boards. At the least, spambots will pick it up eventually and you will get even more spam. Instead, just click on User CP at the very top of the page to access your Private Message area where you can communicate e-mail addresses, and whatever.

Great, I hope you did well on your NBDE1. I am currently a Pharmacy Student, but changing my career focus to Dentistry. Recently, I was accepted to University of North Carolina and Case Western Reserve Dental Schools (Ohio).

Looking forward to share your experience and career goals with you.

PM me HIM0098.

Good to have you guys on the board

Dear Mohamed,

Sorry, I was busy for a while I couldn't reply..

I graduated from Asia ( where?) and live in NJ. I took my NDBE 1 last july and I just took my NDBE 2 last week .

My plans, I dont know, confused like any other foriegn dentist in US.. but always there is a way ..I didn't apply any advanced program becouse that isnt my first choice.. now just crossing my fingers and praying so the CA bill will pass in january, if not I will apply the Advenced programs..

AGAIN mO007,
I THINK IT IS GOOD CHOICE TO GO FOR DENTISTRY INSTEAD OF PHARMCY.

HIM0098,

Welcome to the board , you can see them now and share your exprience with them.... MAA 3ALEESH IHKI AYYI LUQAH WANAFHAMAK..

Hope i will be back soon i wana take a good break I am tired form reading books. Really it seems boring when you are studing some thing you know and all ready studied over and over, however alhamdulillah I am done with it ( after I get the result part 2 in a month insha allah;) ) and looking forward to learn new things.

Soo nabad ahaada..

Garad.

Hey

wow... many of you taking NBDE's. Is it easy to become a dentist in the US after foreign school?

Anyone thinking of specialty in dentistry?

Good Job Guys.

MoOO7, It is not easy to become a Dentist in this country, but it is easy to sit for The NBDE exam. I mean they will let you sit for it and will not say no couse you are not a graduate from an accredited University or something like that..

Garad...Mutshaker..from where in Asia you graduted, I was in far east country(Philippine), are you from Pakistan..Man you are done with all the exames now only you need to do is hope for CA or try to prepare for Minnesota requirment..You see they don't ask you to be US or Canada graduate, but they need a 3 years of experince or do the GPR(two year) or the AEGD (one year).
But sometimes I wonder, is it better not to go back to school and just stick to thoes state that take us as we are. Then we can't be relocating as we wish.By the way..tell me how was part II, any advice in how to prepare for it, I am going to take it next..thanks

see ya all

Hey guys

It seems like most of you graduated from foreign schools, I wonder if any Somalis are currently enrolled in US Dental Schools?

What's this CA bill all about for foreign dentists?

Salam aleikoum,

I am also Somali, and live in the USA for while.
I am interesting attending Medical school in state. I got my B.S. and Master in Public Health in State. I have a job now, but for the last 2 years, I became so interested in medicine. Inshallah If everything goes as plan, I will be attending medical school in Fall of 2005.
Well, It is very motivating to see Somalis. Any Somalis attending Med school or residence here in USA ?

Wish you the best in pursing medical field.

Salam,

So far this thread has topics about Dentistry... but Medical Doctors can share their goals with us too. Afterall, we are all prepared as future professioanls to help each other.

Hey, I said "Topics about Dentistry so far", not for "Dentists!"

Anyone out-there applying to Dental Schools? Why Dentistry is over-looked in our society?

I found an interesting article on this subject: http://ethnomed.org/ethnomed/cultures/somali/som_oral_health.html

Mo

Hay did anyone received the NBDE last Dec result..

I hope all of you passed

Congratulation in advance

Thanks bro..

Yes I did recieved my result last month ,though I took mine by Computer based one.

My two cents are :

The decks and the released exam are enough for the prep.

If you want to take the part 2 through the computer, do it.

For me,now is time to think about the RT.

:)

RT..I thought that it was cancelled..or it was not..

bro..you took your part 2 in form of computer...
how was it..

I might do it,..

for me I am more incline to join the 2 years advace courses and be done with it..even though I know that I would be in loan..but what else to do..

You can tell me your input in this..

please check your PM...

thanks

Hey guys

Nice to see you posting again... I am taking my NBDE1 next year.

Since I am getting my DDS within the US... It might be easier for me as oppose to someone who graduated from foreign Dental School.

I am just guessing... Garad, am I right?

Eid Mubarak

Hay bro MoOO7,

I didnt know that you are already in Dental school. I thought that your planning to change from phrmacy school in the next future...

well good for you..

what school do you go to and what year are you in..
I am sure you have all the help to prepare for NBDE part 1 from your school..

if you have any Q's you can ask me..

One last thing ,, are you taking the computer or the writting one in july.

Good luck

I am not in Dental School now, but I was accepted at 3 schools, and I accepted Case's offer in Cleveland, so I start August 2004 (I already mentioned this). The NBDE1 can be taken after the 1st year, and its what determines if someone can specialise or not.

You guys got to give more details about your NBDE2 exams.

Share the Experience.

walaalayaal..

I did repied to you HMO..

RT was cancelled , but it is in a process to be extended, we have a great hope.

That is good idea if you are prone to do IDP programms, it is a less hassle. But for me RT is my option b/c I am not ready for that big loan.

Mo007, If you wana practice here is a good to do your DDS in here, for us when we were doning the BDS/DDS our aim wasn't to come here(USA).

Prep for NBDE 1 will not be an issue for you b/c you will be fimiliar with the system and the style of the exam, so don't worry about that. There is a great help to check the thread started by maintained by Yeah i think the title is My Study Log for NBDE 1 consult that one is great helo, that help me a lot.

For part 2 will be easier once you get familiar with system.

Over all the key point is Study the text books for the knwoledge and and the decks with the releaesd exams during exam prepation for the NDBE 1 &2.

NAbadeey..

Wow... Good Job Garad!

I remember taking my DAT's to Dental School, at the time, it was like a BIG obstacle. Since I got that out of the way, I guess its not the END of the road... I have NBDE1 to watch out for.

By the way guys (garad, and HIM), which countries did you get your Dental degrees from?.. and your future plans after passing the NBDE2.

Thanks

Happy Eid

Well I had my degree in

University Of the East, C.M Recto, Manila, Philippien

Gradute year 1998.

And I had a mighty fine 6 years of hard work and fun down there.

Philipines Dental Schools are 6 years?? Malaysia is beautiful place for a honeymoon not for Dental School

Sounds like you had both.

Yep...6 Years

two years as a pre-dental course in which you get a degree in Libral Art...

Then Four years Proper. which is the actual dental course.

Manila are based on American System, scince it was colonized by America for quiet sometime.. and the last American Base was demolished like in 1994..

So what you think..

Not bad man, I see the passion for Dentistry and Exotic places.

Are you planning to get into general practise? or specialise?

Mo

I love doing different thing in one day..
I think I will actually kill my self if i kept doing Endo or perio the whole day..

But if God well, I am planing to do more of like advance training in the area that I love most, which is Cosmotic Dentistry,,,specially veneering..and you know us for being somalian especialy the men they truly need help in that area...:D

And by the way,,, I am a female not a male..so address me properly:laugh:

Wait a sec... you are a girl?

My bad... your nick (HIM0098) mislead me.

I apologize!... Lets just forget about this incident :D , I also want to specialise to Cosmetics - Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, but my NBDE1 exams have to be 90+ in all areas...

You know I get that alot..."nick misleading issue"..but what can I say I love my name :D .

Study hard ,, I did that but still I didnt get 90 only 87...which is not going to help me at all..since a lot of schools asking for a real high grade..so I am planing to put my self in the mood of retaking the exame..but I am not sure..

You live in Boston , and thanks for all the Indian Ladies the minimum requirment for the Boston University is 90% and tufft too so what other option that is left for me..I love Boston and I truly want to go there , thye can't beat our Freezing tempreature in Minnesota anyway:p

tell me what university u r planing to join or joined..

Abaayo, Boston is a very lively city, I can tell you all about that or anyone who has been there.

The schools here are by far MOST COMPETITVE in the nation, you mentioned TUFTS, a highly ranked school in New England. The cost of living will make you speechless, but thats not relevant at this stage... (I pay $600 with 3 other roommates in a 4 bd-room apartment, and that's a bargain).

In my opinion, you can still specialise at other schools or instutions, there are 105 programs for OMS in the US, so chose carefully if you decide to apply.

Rotations in OMS are very interesting, I have a friend who graduated from Uni. Michigan, and now doing his OMS in Boston Medical Center.... The Salary is very sweet after 4 years of OMS, with a Median of $240K/yr to a high of $360k/yr depending on experience and where you practise... So the oppertunities are great in Dentistry, OMS is not as far as you go though, you can extend your OMS to 6 yrs, the last 2 yrs being in Medical School, and you get OMS/MD title, and you can move onto other Medical Specialties like General Surgery or Plastic Surgery another 4 yrs minimum training... and the benefits go up too....

I see myelf in OMS, but too early to say that at this stage :D .

Good Luck

That is a wonderful choice OMS..

You have to study hard and maintain a certain score in order to get accepted in that field...it is highly competative...

You do sound like a smart person with ambition..
Good luck

Thanks abaayo... You must be missing Manila after this freezing MN weather. :D

Say!... Are any of you guys following recent political developments about Somalia's Peace Process.... I been watching John Kerry winning around the country.. let alone our own Somali Political signs of Hope.

I hope we reach better goals in the future... We have been immigrating long enough :scared: .

Now, I need some  .

Waw unblievable that I was away that long ..so many replies to read.

I thought I can keep up, but i got busy after the exams.

HIM0098= HER0098, I think if you apply as much as colleges you can you will get it, mostly the colleges will like the diversity and there is no much waryaa on the run - as other nations - when it comes to the IDP.

Awguuryo Mohamed for the acceptance.

OMS is the best speciality in dentistry IMHO, and I will do it sooner or later insha allah. It is nice to start your plans now, it is not too early to talk about, feel comfortable.

We pray everyday to go back again and live peacefully.

I never knew, how a freezing point feels like. But now I know Mohamed, and even I can write a novel about it.:p

Last week, I went to the Ice palace before they demolished..it was so magnificent..to the extent I lost all the feeling in my lower part for 2 days. You know, you could tour the entire palace in 30 min, but after one hour and half waiting in line to enter :D ..

about the political issue, I have lost faith in our elders back there in somalia. So I am waiting for all of them to die and let the new generation rules.. atleast they wouldnt mind sharing the power. and hopefully they wouldnt be brainwashed by their elders..hopefully..

Garad: yea man you have been gone for quiet sometime. Tell me, have you gone to california, I was reading something about approving the extention for RT exam but there is a clause.
about the diversity Issues you are right, I only find two university who does that , so I am waiting till they open the application for 2005 class..

take care..

HER0098......

HIM0098: You are waiting for the current war-lords to die? - How long will that take? - by then its "time-up" for you too.

1st of all, I wouldnt wish anyone to DIE - period. The current situation in Somalia is slightly improving - well - at least better than a decade ago. Surely people are getting tired of "Qabiil". But there is a catch, and its a one that wont benefit the nation - but the current state leaders. Somalia will be entering a phase just like other African nations did or are currently in, where certain politicians will abuse their power, and want to stay around until they "DIE".

My opinion - Let them do it, that's better than nothing, and time will come where the nation will evolve to a more civilised society.

So don't wish for "DEATH to WARLORDS" - but "PEACE to the NATION".

Garad: Your prayers will be answered, and I agree with your idea of lets start planning now, looks like we are already doing our part.

HIM0098: You are waiting for the current war-lords to die? - How long will that take? - by then its "time-up" for you too

**** Oh my God, Am I going to die before them..that is really unfair, why,,why.. always the bad seed last longer than the good seed.

*** Me too, I do not want anymore death in somalia, enough is enough. But they are leaving us with no choice. We have been talking for the last 15 years. Don't you think, talking making it worst, the more they talk the more they don't agree. And thats my friend defy logic..And about the phase issue , you are right, but let me ask you this,we have waited more than 15 years, how long do you thing this phase will last.

I truly want to see a peace there. I have fond memories of Xamer, and that is all what Xamer means to me now, a memory .

I'll just keep doing what I do now, pray.

Hey there.... Welcome to the future Somali professionals club.

I hear a lot of Somalis are going to those Caribbean Medical Schools - are you attending ROSS? I have a brother heading there in few weeks, he is excited about it.

Thrive to succeed man!

Hi is there a somali dentist out there
or dental students?

Are you a dentist, dental student or considering dentistry?

I am taking a year off after changing career focus from Pharmacy to Dentistry. If you are applying for 2005, you are just in time for the new cycle - May 17, 2004.

Good Luck

Its good to see the my fellow peeps on the move like this. Its about time we see professional Somalis in medicine, dentistry or engineering. Am undergrad getting my degree in engineering but i've always been interested in medicine.

I just want to say to all those in pursuit of success, don't let anything stop you..its all about being focused and staying on course eventhough at times it gets difficult.
