What other career paths can be followed with a MD/DO degree? Any ideas? I've read mutliple threads where the subject is raised but not directly addressed. I would prefer to look into other options before settling for a residency......epecially if I don't MATCH into the specialty that I want.

There are a few jobs that are 'urban legend' types:
1.) being a physician for the Porn industry, this job actually does exist, the "Industry" even runs their own lab, which has a medical director.

2.) being a physician with poison control, also really does exist. I believe USC's med school was quite notorious for having a rotation on poison control.

3.) being a physician for the Hollywood movie industry, also does exist but is far less interesting than option 1.

4.) being a private physician/servant for someone who is super rich, I never known anyone to actually do it, but I heard from a friend who had a former roomate who supposedly heard of some group of docs who did nothing but live with ultrawealthy families as some type of live in Family med doc/nanny.
verdict is out on this one.

5.) working in the sex toy industry, also does exist, but jobs might be rare.

feel free to add more.

Much less interesting that the options provided by LaDoc, research is also an option. Many government agencies and pharmaceutical companies hire MDs, many of whom have not completed a residency, for research protocols or administrative positions.

Pharm companies always needs MDs, especially for research. Actually, health care affliated companies in general may need MDs to oversee and utilize their medical expertise.

What about interviewing in 2 specialties as opposed to trying to scramble into something you may not like. Several students I know are doing EM and IM. Good luck.

Unfotrtunately, none of LA Doc's options are legit until you pass step III and complete 1 year of internship...

Fortunatley for me, I have done both. I know there are other options out there.

I have met enough miserable physicians to realize that I would rather search for an alternative, then settle for a residency in something I don't want.

I thank LA Doc for his/her contribution (although hair plugs weren't mentioned) But their are realistic alternatives out there. Please if anyone has a REAL suggestion please post.

WTF, my suggestions are realistic. I have had my app into the Adult Film Industry Lab in Van Nuys since I finished training. Dont player hate.

I worked at this plasma center when I was a premed. We had an MD visit us every 2 weeks to check on things...that was all she did (2 hour visit/2 weeks). When she came in, she would meet with our center RN, and our center manager...look over some charts...then leave. She covered our center, in addition to other centers in the area. She looked happy. This is the link to the job position:

Good Luck!
