In general ortho surgeons seem to earn a significant amount more in salary on average than a podiatrist in the US and Canada.

Just to shoot out to all current DPMs out there as well, where does the main source of income come from? I've heard of some DPMs specializing in bunions stricly, and others specializing in rearfoot reconstruction.

I guess my question is how much on average do the various procedures/appointments/diagnosis/orthodics cost? Do you find one area more profitable than another? Could you provide a breakdown of income/costs of running a practice? Please comment on your various experiences as a DPM.



Also in Ontario, what are the salary ranges for Chiropodists??? And what is the breakdown of income as well? Or does it not differ form a DPM practicing in Ontario much (ie. Salary stats bunch in chiropodists as "podiatrists").

payouts per procedures are a little complicated because this has alot of factors that include insurance companies. On average though, DPMs get paid less per procedure than an orthopoedic surgeon - the APMA is currently fighting for equal pay per procedure but as it stands right now, this is not the case.

In terms of our "bread and butter" procedures, you will see that in any surgical practice you won't do more than 10% surgeries, so there is a heavy emphasis on conservative care - usually in our profession, we don't employ surgical treatments unless absolutely necessary so we'll give our patients alternative treatments and if surgery is the necessary, we're prepared to operate.

Each practice is differen in terms of number of procedures. I know some practices rely heavily on orthotics while others do mostly wound care and diabetic management, and others are fully integrated with orthopoedic groups. So really it depends on the doctor and his level of training as well. But the common theme is always conservative treatments of course.

I can't comment on the earnings of chiropidists in Ontario because this isn't my specialty of course. But I will say that the few DPMs are generally doing ok ($200,000 net range with 40% percent overhead) - don't quote me on this figure because I heard this number from one podiatrist and a fellow classmate of mine.
