Does applying to an MD/MBA program carry any risk? For instance, if I am accepted to the MD program but not the MBA, will I not be offered admission? Is it better to just apply for MD admission initially and then apply for the MBA?

Thank you for your help!

It won't decrease your chances for admission.

FYI: Many US schools offer the MBA option to students after they're admitted to the medical school. A few US schools allow folks to apply for the dual degree program before they're enrolled.

Agreed - It absolutely shouldn't hurt. HOWEVER, the one risk is that some programs will hold you to it - for example at Harvard if you're accepted to MD/MBA you have to complete both to graduate, can't drop the MBA during the first 3 years of Med School, so you're kind of bound to an extra year of tuition/time but hey, if you're deciding definitely go for it!

And when you're applying be sure to take a look at the md mba associations application resource site http://www.mdmbas.com/ForProspectiveStudents/ApplicationAdvice/
