I am starting medical school this year. What are good topics/areas for research that would be applicable to plastic surgery? Also, what are the best resources for getting a grasp on the trends and innovations in the field?

Thanks.

IMHO, some good topics/areas for research are the following:

1. Wound Care- Ex:What dressings are more useful to treat ulcers? Compare/contrast wet-to-dry dressings alone vs. panafil plus wet-to-dry vs. panafil alone.
2. Reconstructions- Ex: In patients with breast reconstruction by using the latissimus dorsi or rectus abdominus, what is their muscle function like after surgery? Do they still experience muscle weakness? For how long...months or years? Are they able to overcome the weakness?
3. Hemangiomas- Ex: Is it genetic? If so, what are the genes involved?

These are very broad topics and you can go anywhere with them.

The best sources to gather info about the advances in the field are found in Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Annals of Plastic Surgery, and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons www.plasticsurgery.org.

If you're interested in research, you should look up an academic plastic surgeon in your area and volunteer in his/her lab. Free help is always welcome. Good luck! :luck:
