SCHEDULE:
Days: Monday - Friday
Daily Start: 8:00 am ET
Daily End: 5:00 pm ET (Dependent on daily caseload; no case enrollment on Friday)


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • MD degree or equivalent
  • Approximately 1-year commitment to the study.
HIGHLY DESIRED
  • Experience in a medical research and/or biology research lab setting, or similar experience.
  • Basic knowledge of cardiac anatomy.
  • Experience with informed consent, patient interviews, or similar.
  • Knowledge of computer skills and applications including: Microsoft Word, Adobe Reader, document upload and scanning.
Impeccable communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to exercise standards of professionalism, including appearance, presentation, and demeanor.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative and respectful manner with team members and collaborators in a diverse, multidisciplinary research team.
Demonstrated ability to work accurately with meticulous attention to detail and the Institute’s standards of data quality.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion when handling sensitive data and information.
Strong commitment to ensuring that study goals and timelines are met.

DESCRIPTION:

This is an opportunity for candidates interested in biological, forensic or mortuary sciences, or related fields. You will have the ability to work with a team of Medical Examiners, research physicians, and pathology professionals.

This position is in support of a prospective clinical research study that aims to improve diagnosis of coronary artery disease by analyzing cardiac CT in decedents with suspected sudden cardiac death. Enrollment is carried out at the Baltimore OCME.

This is a joint project by the Dalio Institute of Cardiovascular Imaging (Dalio ICI) at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York, New York (Clinical Coordinating Center), the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, Maryland, and CVPath Institute in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The Research Assistant will report directly to the Dalio ICI for project specific matters, and CVPath Institute for human resources (benefits, time card, etc).

Under the direction of researchers at the Dalio ICI, the Research Assistant will work with the team of Medical Examiners on location at the Baltimore OCME and forensic pathologists at CVPath to facilitate the day-to-day execution of the research study.


Job duties include:
  • Attend 8:00am morning rounds with Medical Examiners at the OCME to identify eligible cases for enrollment.
  • Obtain informed verbal consent from next of kin.
  • Perform cannulation on explanted hearts while ensuring the integrity of the anatomical structures.
  • Perform and assist with CT scanning process.
  • De-identify and assign study-specific code to each case.
  • Perform organ post-processing including formalin fixation of heart after scanning.
  • Perform or coordinate image transfer of CT cases upon completion of scanning.
  • Complete intake forms (case report forms). Electronic transfer/upload of data.
  • Maintain inventory of research supplies. Maintain the study’s inventory list up-to-date; communicate with the Project Manager when new orders need to be placed.
  • Maintain the regulatory binder, ensuring data integrity, security, and compliant filing/storage of study forms and data.
  • Review accuracy of data entry by study staff
  • Communicate regularly with the research team for study progress.
  • Weekly study conference calls.
  • Weekly emails to study staff with updates on screening, enrollment, roadblocks, milestones, and new developments.
  • Daily communication with Dalio ICI supervisors regarding logistics and study conduct.
  • Coordination (remotely and in-person as needed) with CVPath for cannulation, histopathology samples, imaging data, coregistration.
  • Coordination with study staff for image and CRF data management.
  • Coordination with co-investigators.
  • (optional) Assist with data analysis and manuscript preparation.
Recruitment and enrollment milestones for DISCOVER-VP:
  • Recruitment and enrollment of 260 cases completed by August 1, 2020.
  • 50% of patients enrolled by June 1, 2019.
  • Last patient enrolled August 1, 2020.
  • Planned enrollment of at least 3 cases per week, as permitted by case availability.
