I did a search and the results weren't really clear so I figured I'd start a new thread. Someone asked me the other day when you actually learn how to do an MVA or first-trimester abortion or/and second-trimester abortions. Could you do this as a reproductive health elective in med4? Would it have to be in residency? If the person was in a Family Practice residency, would it be an elective month? A few months? How about for Ob/Gyn residents...is it just picked up along with everything else during Gyn surgery rotations? How about another specialist who wanted to be a provider...would it have to be arranged through their program or could they use their elective rotations? Thanks

There are med4 rotations where you can do it. Depends where, but I think most places are pretty happy to teach that skill and allow you to try. Don't know about the fp residents. About OB residents, i think it depends on your residency. In UCSF I believe you rotate through the clinic and can opt out if you wish. I think that's how it works in most places.

Supposedly every ob-gyn residency program has to offer abortion training to residents. If the hospital doesn't offer it for whatever reason, they need to make arrangements to send you somewhere where you can learn it. Of course, residents can opt out if they don't want to.

Medical Students for Choice has a reproductive health externship program that you can do during medical school and you can work with a provider. It's something to look into if you're interested.

They offer elective rotation options for med students and depending on the site you end up at, you'll be able to do procedures. I did this between first and second years and did about 30 first tri procedures under supervision.

They also have a database of ob and fp residency programs where folks can detail how much training they get/give in their residencies. Lots of gaps in it still but its a valuable resource. Add your comments about your home insititutions, if you know how it works there!
