So i was lucky enough to start my intern year with rad/derm and I feel like I'm still in med school. My duty is to just show up and follow around my attending whenever he/she goes to see pts. Is this normal? I was really excited to finally start residency to get up and go do some real work but this isn't exactly what I expected. Does anyone have different experience?

Yes, a lot of residency continues to be to pretend to be interested in things. Try to ask about what a primary care doctor would refer for, what they expect primary care to know, what's important not to miss as a doctor. Look toward the future when you won't have that kind of access to specialists. Ask questions and appear interested, even if you have to fake it. You'll have plenty of time to do real work, don't worry!

Live it up while you can. Because sooner or later you're going to be on inpatient medicine. And while I like inpatient; it's hard work for the interns.

Yes....did you actually expect to be dictating 30-40 CT/MRIs, doing US-guided breast biopsies, or putting in perc neph tubes during a radiology elective?...Enjoy your down time, ICU and inpatient Q4 Call (36+ hrs without sleep) was a freakin nightmare as an intern...
