Question regarding Big Blue

This may seem like a stupid question but I was just wondering when most residents buy Big Blue to study for boards? Do most people buy at the beginning of their last year or do most people buy it after their first year? I ask because I know that the editions do change every year and $560 is not chump change. I just wanted to get some opinions from the pro's who have already taken the boards or from those getting ready to take it this year.
