My boyfriend is going to medical school next fall. I'm wondering what will happen if we decide to get married in the time he's in school - will that completely screw up his financial aid if we start filing taxes jointly and there is an actual income reported (as modest as it is)? I just really don't want to have to put off marriage until he's out of school simply because of the federal government. Any advice would be appreciated.

It really depends on how much you are going to make as to if it will mess up his aid or not. I know someone that makes about 25K, and her spouse gets full financial aid. I don't know what the cutoff is though.

Though, you need to think about his age. If he is young and unmarried, they will take his parents income into account. However, if he is married, then they won't. This could be a big plus to being married. :)

You might want to check out the financial aid forum as well for more info.

Good luck and have fun on this new journey!

With smiles,
Wifty
