Question about applying to IM subspecialties

Hi. Thanks for tolerating another one of these threads.

As I understand it, you apply for fellowships shortly after your intern year is over. At that point, what kinds of info are programs looking at to extend interviews? CVs, I'm sure, but do you have to procure new letters (detailing your performance as an intern) from your PD? Do they look at med school stuff, like USMLE scores?

CV. Research in progress as a resident. You will need new letters from people in the field. 2-3 from attendings in the field (preferably at least 1 with a name and 1 that knows you very well) and the program director letter (akin to the dean's letter which is basically a rubber stamp stating you're a qualified applicant and won't disgrace the residency).

Step scores are rarely looked at. Some programs request them but those are the exception rather than the rule.
