Hi everybody

I am a G.S resident in a Mid west program. I have started my fellowship application today and awaiting FCVS.

Unfortunately I could not find decent information about Independent PRS programs so starting this thread so we can keep each other informed. Sharing your experiences and knowledge is highly appreciated in advance.

I ll start posting program reviews & pros and cons from the past. Please try to update and post information that you have. I have already posted the list of independent programs in the current match.
 
Hey DocHawk, how's the application going for independent PRS? The integrated threat tends to get far more hits. I submitted my application yesterday. There have been a few shifts from programs-but now, the tally is 52 programs.

What does the applicant pool look like this year? More or less applicants?

Is Cleveland Clinic Florida's deadline really 10/1?
 
Application submitted!!! That ABPS letter requirement was an unpleasant surprise...I thought I was all set to go weeks ago! Anyone else thinks it's ridiculous how many times we have to verify our credentials? Between that, FCVS, the transcripts and score reports we have to send...

(Sorry, I'm just bitter because I spent essentially every minute of every day off on my trauma rotation putting together my application. Excited to have it all done and can't wait to meet you guys on the interview trail!!)

Hey everybody ... Good to hear from you guys ..finally we are seeing some activity on our thread too. I was busy on trauma, just finished it.

Its hard to say about the applicant pool, I think they are far more this year because when i count the number of applicants that i am aware of in this metro city , its actually doubled then last year. Let's hope that we have more positions then applicants. lolz

Hey funtimes Cleveland clinic Florida has mentioned this deadline on SF match introduction so I am assuming its right.

I am looking to get some info about Lahey clinic program also. Was it an integrated program before or just a brand new program ?

and Hey Medicane what ABPS letter are you talking about ? my FCVS is still pending, they have returned my documents x 2 now with some glitch
 
Hey DocHawk, Lahey clinic had always been an independent program. I am not sure if they are going the integrated route this year, even if they are they should still have the independent program running for a few years (like Albert Einstein, NY). On a side note, lahey clinic was unmatched this year with 2 open spots which they filled later in the scramble. Good luck!!!
 
Question...

Are all independent programs eventually going to be phased out in the next few years? I've heard that it is becoming mandated that programs switch to an integrated model.

And if so...are the medical students who are entering general surgery in the next few years out of luck in matching into a plastic surgery fellowship later on ? (in 5+ years)... Thanks in advance.

It doesn't get any better. The application process for the boards (not to mention the test itself) is ridiculous. Then there's applying for a job, hospital credentialing, privilege forms, annual renewals, re-certs, etc. Welcome to a career of filling out paperwork.

The Chair of Lahey resigned last year. He was/is an amazing guy. As a result, they pulled out of the match 2 years ago. Then, as mentioned previously, they did not fill either of the two positions last year. Who knows what will happen next year. I do know that you are stuck in Maine for half of the program.
 
I LOVE IT! ITS SO RELAXING TO BE DONE WITH THAT F%@#IN APPLICATION. MY STUFF WAS DONE 1 WEEK AGO AND VANDY SAID THAT THEY HAVE MY COMPLETED APP! YAY!

Any word yet on the # of applicants. I think that it's going to be less actually,dochawk. I'm an ENT resident and none of the GS residents at my program are even applying!

hi every body ...

don't forget to mention invites that you guys are getting .. also please share your knowledge about program's strength and weakness. If you check websites of these programs the impression that you get is "all is good" but obviously only experienced people can enlighten us.

and yes good luck to every surgeon and med student !!!!
 
You can call SF match to get the info about the no of distributed applications but I would wait till nov end to call, as some people (including myself last year) could not get the application distributed mainly because of FCVS. There were about 150 applicants last year for nearly 100 spots.
 
I am the Program Director for Lahey Clinic Plastic Surgery Program and can provide additional information to almost any questions you may have.

We are an independent program but previously had both integrated and independent routes. Being a three year program for a total resident compliment of 4, we accept residents on a repeating three year cycle of 2, 1 and 1 residents and will be interviewing for one position this year.

I haven't been on this forum in a while. SF Match just received my FCVS cert today. Don't know how long they will take to forward it to the programs. It's a nice feeling to be done with the application part though. Good luck to all of us. Hope to see you on interviews !
 
We have officially been overtaken on posts by the integrated crowd. The youth have faster fingers to type. :laugh: Has anyone heard anything yet? Also, any word yet on the application pool size? I heard its abt the same...low and good.
 
Hello everybody ..

few questions ... my FCVS will be sent to the programs almost at the end of November. Is it too late ? FSMB is painfully slow

when do we expect interviews ? any word on number of applicants this year ?
 
My FCVS finally went through just over a week ago, thank god!

And yesterday I received my first interview invitation: Temple University

Anybody else get an invite there, or anywhere else for that matter (I thought it was early, was not expecting any offers until december)
 
My FCVS has been sent finally .. hope its not too late.

Still waiting to hear from programs. Plastics program at my place has received only 65 applications as yet, down from 110 last year ... Good news for all of us i guess.

Have you guys had a chance to talk to SF match ? In the past couple of months i have called them twice (with reasonable questions) but they have been very inappropriate and unprofessional .. Am i the only one who had bad experience with SF match ppl ? today they even hung up on me and did not even let me speak.

University of Mississippi and University of Tennessee Memphis just sent out interviews today.
 
Got University of Mississippi. Two interview dates - in January (22nd/23rd) and February (10/11).

This waiting is the worst thing ever.

spoke to people from SF Match on Friday - they say there are a "few less people" applying this year than last. I guess that means there's probably around 140 applicants.

Hi Dochawk thank you for setting this up. I applied a long time ago. no interviews yet just waiting. Did not apply to any of the programs that have sent out interviews so far. For those who have asked about the cleveland clinic due date none of the dates are set in stone other than the match date.

I love waiting for interviews. Like a sweet pain. Things r good so far :cool:. At my institution, got a senior PRS guy who is really connected and overall a really nice guy and a good human being. Should I ask him to call before interviews go out or later after the invites have gone out? Thoughts?
 
I don't think Texas A&M is part of the independent match, right?
 
Scott and white takes one person per year through the independent match. I think they also take one integrated.
 
Thank you to DocHawk for starting this blog. I'm glad that I finally found it as I'm applying for the independent match this year too. Out of curiousity, to how many programs did you all apply? I applied to 30. What an expensive process I foresee this being.
 
Hey everyone! I'm in this crazy process with the rest of you. I'm glad to hear the invites are slowly coming through. I've heard back from about half the programs listed here so far. In talking to one of our residents who matched last year, she warned me that the invites come in waves. A few in Dec and more in Jan. Good luck to everyone!
