Protocol for withdrawing?

I never thought I would be this fortunate but I got off two wait lists in the past week. I put the deposit down at the first school but now have to notify them that I'm not going to attend. What is the best way to do this - send an email to the main admissions website or call the office? Should I just thank them for the opportunity and tell them that I will not be attending? Any advice would be much appreciated? Thanks.

I called the admissions office, but then they told me they needed it in writing so I emailed them an extremely grateful letter declining my spot, and that sufficed.

It might be different at other schools of course
