prepping for ortho before dent

Hi, I'd just like to know how important it is to prepare in advance for doing a specialty like ortho even before attending dental school. How important is the school that you choose to go to? From the other postings here, I understand that you have to be at the top of your class and ace your boards to be accepted. What if you decided to practice for a few years before applying? Does that make a difference? Thanks for any and all input, Tab
