For anyone who would know the answer to the following, please help.

If you are applying to both prelims in medicine and ophthalmology and you go to interviews for the prelims, do they ever tell you to notify them if you match into ophtho in january? In other words, is their ranking of you in Feb or March ONLY under the condition that you DO match in ophtho in January? Do they have any way of checking if you did/did not match in ophtho?

Essentially, do they really care if you match into ophtho to the point that if you don't, they will not rank you (even if you were interviewed by them and they seriously considered ranking you?)

Thanks.

most programs where you interview for preliminary spots would be happy to have you any day of the week and will likely rank you highly regardless of where you match for ophthalmology. If you match at a place and want to do your internship there, you could probably just call the PD and let him/her know you'll be ranking his/her program #1. The obvious exception would be for the more competitive medicine programs at top schools.

thanks for your input; but has anyone heard of any preliminary medicine program that interviews you and only ranks you if you DO MATCH in ophthalmology in January?
