Mmm...perhaps phone the HPCSA. I am a med student in SA and was wondering about my internship/residency - like, if I skip them and specialize in the US, can I still come back? They replied within 24hrs. In essence, I would have to apply to have my internship (2 years) credited based on the training I received abroad, and then complete my com-service year. I would GUESS that you are in a similar boat - but I would phone them or email them AGAIN.

:)

Thanks for the reply. Can you please let me know the email address that you sent your query to?

I am thinking of specialising overseas but to be honest it may just be worth it to specialise here. You have to do an extra year of comm serv here now anyway. It's great experience.

I don't think that you will have to do comm serv coming from a university overseas.

Hey all,

I'm a RSA citizen studying medicine in France. I was wondering if it was possible to do all my post-graduate training back in SA? I guess I would have to do 2 years of internship then comm serv year then specialization, but I'm not sure how to apply (or if I'm allowed to).

Could anyone help me with this please?

Thanks a lot!

I think that you should contact the HPCSA and probably one of the universities here and just ask.

I think they would want at least 5 years of General medicine experience at a south African government hospital
