I heard from Children's Memorial in Chicago in early October. They called.

does anyone know whats the deal with :

Presbyterian Hospital Columbia (NY)

St. Christophers Hosp (PA)

thanks! :)

I know that columbia is mailing theirs out this week from what i heard, or maybe early next week.

If you didn't do an externship at St. Chris (Philly, PA) you will not get in. They don't do interviews, the directors get together and they pick who they want that went through. SO basically you made a $45 donation to the ADEA. Too bad no one else knows St. Chris works this way.

There are still a few schools no one has posted about. Does anyone have some more to add? Have some schools still not given out interviews?

Which schools? I might have heard either way but at this point i'm sure all interviews have been given.

has anyone heard anything about the programs in ohio, ie case western and metrohealth?

I'll wait one more week until I agree with you. (That sounds like a good arbitrary amount of time, doesn't it?)

I know for a fact that case has not given out interviews, mainly due to the fact that they don't have a pedo program :D

Cinci and Columbus have.

Can someone who has visited different pedo programs tell me how they differ. I've looked at some websites and all of the schools seem to offer the same thing. I'm not talking about stipends or 2 vs 3 years and so forth but training.

Also I know that a lot of programs like to inbreed, which schools are best to apply to if you didn't go to dental school there?

Things to consider when looking at programs:

Hospital or school-based?
How much didactic work do they get?Are the classes P/F or do they have graded exams?
What is the call like? Is it in-house? How is it split b/w residents?
How much time do they spend in the OR?
What kind of oral sedation do they use? How many patients do they do it on? Any IV sedation?
How seriously is the research requirement taken (some programs make you only do data collection, some it's hard-core and you won't graduate on time unless you are done)
How many full time staff do they have?
What % of residents go on to become board certified?

Generally, I would suggest you make a decision on whether or not you are looking for a school-based or hospital-based program. Generally school-based programs tend to be more didactic and many focus more on research. You will spend a lot more time in actual classes in comparison to hospital based-programs. The stipends are generally lower than hospital programs. Hospital programs are generally more focused on clinical aspects, you will get more OR and sedation experience generally, will see more special needs patients, and will be on call more.

Then, break it down by geographical region if you want to live in certain areas. I would recommend asking the pedo chair at your dental school for recommendations as well. I can specifically answer questions about some schools so if you have any more questions feel free to PM me.

Also, I get the feeling that the Northeast programs (NY esp) tend to know most of the applicants before the interview. I am not in NY for dental school and at all the interviews I had at NY programs I felt like most people there all knew each other. Since there are so many dental schools w/in a small radius i guess the applicants visit the programs ahead of time (or many have done gprs there).

Obviously hospital programs don't "take their own".

None of my conversations at interviews this year ever involved discussing rank/board scores. We often discussed where else people were going for interviews.....one could assume that those with tons of invites had the higher stats, but numbers were never thrown out on the table.

That has been my experience as well. No one ever came remotely close to talking about board scores on my interviews, ususally it was just friendly small talk. Did people ask about them at any other types of interviews?

Interesting stuff. As pedo becomes more and more competitive you'd think it would draw a greater number of applicants who enjoy throwing their scores around.

Then again, perhaps this is more of a testament that it *does* take a special person to practice pedo, and while said people are bright and hard-working, they are also smart enough to understand that their high marks don't make an excellent pediatric dentist.

Yes, I also meant to say that according to the programs I visited it has gotten very competitive, and the number and quality of applicants increased significantly this year alone.

Yes, I also meant to say that according to the programs I visited it has gotten very competitive, and the number and quality of applicants increased significantly this year alone.

A DT poster who matched at Nevada last year and is currently a PGY-1 mentioned that nearly every applicant interviewing had a 95 or so on Part I. This may be off-base, but it is certainly an awakening from what I hear pedo was like in years past.

Of course I have no hard evidence for this but have to say that is overblown. I didn't have a 95 and went 10/10 for interviews so im guessing that's not the case.

No action in this thread for over a month--anything going on? I set up a 2 week externship for May that I'm very excited about...

I guess things are quiet before the storm...radily approaching on monday.

Where is your externship set up?

The Nevada "fact" is overblown. I am a resident there. Good luck to you all on Monday!! Check your email!!!!!

Does Nevada have an externship program? I've emailed and called and haven't gotten much information from them.

I could be wrong...but from what I heard from people who tried to apply to Nevada this year, the program is not going to exist after the current residents finish the program....i.e., no new residents to be accepted.

I'm glad to get some sort of clarification on that. First I heard they were closing down, then that UNLV was going to take the program on board with the dental school.

The program is currently with UNR SOM. The program will close out the last class (2007). It is rumored that UNLV SOD will be then starting up their own program - I think there was something to do with funding etc and letting the program close and re-open.............but not sure. Also UNLV will be getting a new Dean soon, so who knows what plans will be in the coming for them.

Hey soon to be or already pedo residents: Welcome to the HOTTEST specialty in the dental field.
