getting pretty discouraged, so far it seems everywhere I applied has passed on interviewing me (UIC, UTHSC-Tennessee, UW-Seattle).
Pretty sure I got UTHSCSA as a courtesy because I'm a DS4 here. I'm top 15 in my class and got my rec letters from pedo faculty but don't have much extracurriculars tailored to pedo because I decided I wanted pedo pretty late.
I applied to 14 schools, you guys think I have a chance of getting more interviews? Or is the lack of extracurriculars and demonstrating commitment to pedo just going to kill me?
 
So pretty much in agreement that UIC only called on 9/24 and will not be calling again?
 
If I were you, would say at least 2 more interviews.. All you need is one.

True, as long as I really make that one interview count, it's all I need...still would like to be invited to more though :(
 
Does anyone know if UW Seattle just sends out interview invites at only one time?

I wondering if anyone has any insight on the New York area programs? Are they all pretty much the same (long hours, high volume, self guided)?

Also does anyone know if Interfaith Medical Center is still open? I heard it was shutdown due to bankruptcy o_O
 
Anyone else noticing patterns as to the programs that have extended them interview invites? If there is anything I'm certain of at this point, externships seem to be huge in pedo. No wonder people end up taking out credit cards for this whole process!

Yes everyone says the externships can really help or hurt you for pedo.

How many places did people Extern at? I did time at my dental school's graduate clinic and a couple days at MUSC and Houston but didn't hear from MUSC or Houston yet. Followed up with "thank you's" too. I also did a 4 week Externship at a private practice as our school wouldn't let us split it into 4 different pedo programs (yet they let oral surgery applicants go to as many clinics as they want?) Seems really competitive this year!

Ps. Rejected from VCU today :(
 
My wife externed at 4 programs and believes that it was probably overkill to do that many. So far she's received 4 interviews, of which 2 are from programs she externed at.

About Interfaith, I heard from a friend that it is definitely not closed and recently out of bankruptcy. I was also told that there have been many good changes in the past couple of months including maybe a new clinic under way and huge improvements with the new staff. What I was told was enough to change my mind to apply to the program.

I am also applying to only New York programs. I have heard mixed things about different programs so do your research. New York programs in general are high volume and long hours because most are hospital based programs in underserved areas. You will get to see a lot of interesting cases just based on patient population. Also, living in New York city would be a dream come true.

Not necessarily, especially if the schools you applied to haven't sent out interviews.

I received a confirmation email from Rutgers, they said they would be extending interviews within the next three weeks.

Hello everyone,

I strongly feel that seniors students in dental school have higher chances for getting in as compared to the people with extensive experience. And I wish I could have applied while I was in dental school.
70-80 % of the programs carry a misconception about candidates with experience that they picked bad habit from practice for so many years.
Just wanted to encourage the people who havent recieved any call yet..... You shall get one soon...............

I noticed that in previous years, the list was organized in alphabetical order by program. I thought that might be easier as the list gets longer to be able to find programs easily than to try to search by the date the interview was offered.

As you post a new program, please bold the most recent update (including the name of the program) so that everyone can see the newest addition as the list is updated (since it won't necessarily be placed at the end of the list anymore).

Hi guys wanted to know if anyone would like to share accommodation for LMC Holyoke MA
 
What is the difference between UTHSC- and UTHSCSA? I'm assuming it's the same school? Dumb question I'm sure. Colorado is making me nervous. They gave out emails today but in the past they've emailed on the 10th through 12th. I wonder if there will be more emails to be sent.

UTHSCA=UT Health Science Center-San Antonio
2 different programs I believe.

That seems to be the big question. Do programs make all their calls/invites on one day, or multiple days? I wish I knew the answer..

Pretty sure that at least my school (San Antonio) calls people over multiple days. Our director of pre-doc pedo had told me that every DS4 applying from our school would receive a courtesy interview and I know for sure at least one classmate hasn't gotten their invite yet (there's only 4 of us applying this year).

TexasOMFS, thats good to know. I was hoping to hear from San Antonio, but had pretty much given up hope. But maybe there is still a glimmer of hope left for me...lol
 
I just got an email from Louisville today and it was originally posted on 9/28. Not sure if I'm and alternate or not, but there is a chance you will get contacted from programs later.

Yes, I meant Children's hospital CO....that's the only pedo program in CO.

Not really sure about this. Based on my conversations with directors, I got the the feeling that experience is heavily valued in their decision making process. Candidates with gpr or private practice experience have extensive restorative skills which can't be matched by any d4 student and their decision to pursue pedo is solid. In my research of ny programs, a few of them don't even accept applicants without gpr. Now obviously this does not mean d4 student don't get accepted. There are a lot more d4 students getting accepted because there are more d4 applicants.

Having said that...I think we all will get accepted!! :) best of luck to everyone

But there are still a lot more programs that have not given out invites yet. We are maybe, 1/3rd of the way through. But a good number of programs did give out invites earlier than they did last year, if one compares the 2014 thread with this one..

That's true !!this is the beginning of the interview season ! I am trying to be super hopeful all the way :)

So is it over if you didn't hear from UTHSCSA by now? I applied only in 5 places and got 3 interviews up till now, do I have a good chance to get in?
 
Just talked to Cheryl Shaul from Seattle, the last of their interview invites went out today. I didn't make the cut :/
 
Ok...maybe a silly question but I'm curious. For those that have friends already in residency. Do programs give you any inclination during interviews? I know they can't make offers or anything like that or really tell you anything ...but i have seen the statistics regarding match and I'm just curious how 80-85% of those that match do so with their first choice? Im just curious if people just "get a feeling" from the interview or what?

Good question. Even though technically they cant make offers, I've heard of programs basically insinuating that they really want an applicant and telling them they will rank them "high". But I still feel like its up to the applicant as to whether to take that chance or keep attending more interviews..cause you just never know.
But I feel it would really be hard to gauge how much they like you, unless they offer you a position outside of match. If you are a generally friendly person with a "pedo" personality,you will likely flow well with the residents/program directors and feel your interviews generally went well. But past that, I have no idea. A current resident's insight would be great right now. Maybe @sarah_bellum could help us out. :)

I would say it would be hard to know what a program thinks of you unless you have some sort of connection where you interviewed. The match is a crap shoot. Rank the program you like the best and hope you get ranked.
