PCOM- Atlanta, Georgia Discussion thread 2007-2008

Anyone know if there is a good place to swim (swimming pool) by the school? I don't believe there is one at the school.

I am a member of LAFitness and they usually have good pools (although some disagree). From the school tour, I had found out there is a gym branch located 5(?) minutes away from the campus (have to go over the bridge that spans the highway). Hope that helps.

there are many gyms nearby. there is also an AQUATIC CENTER that is a short drive.

Hey guys,

It's been a month since I've gotten accepted and I still have not received my binder yet. Anyone else waiting on the binder or know of any updates concerning when I should receive it?

latest batch of BINDERS mailed yesterday from Philadelphia.

I have two quick things to say - first a word of advice: to all of you out there getting your titers for school.....make sure they are QUANTITATIVE not qualitative. Many of my classmates have had to have their titers redrawn to enter the hospitals this coming June. Go ahead and have them done quantitatively otherwise you may have to have them redrawn (and pay for them again) in two years. Maybe they have corrected this with your class's information, but if they haven't please spread the word!

Secondly, about Dr. Rogers.......and I really would like to refrain from starting a lengthy discussion about this because the investigation is ongoing, however, as a student on campus it's hard to believe that something like this is true. It seems very suspicious that a man of his education status would be stupid enough to look at something like that on a work computer and then turn it over to have it looked at by anyone - let alone the school. All the guys out there (educated or not) probably KNOW that porn (whatever the kind) doesn't disappear off your computer after you close the webpage. I have a hard time believing that he would actually turn the slow running computer over to someone from the school with something like that on it. Plus he was the main person setting up the eventual computer based testing on campus, so he had to have at least a rudimentary knowledge of computers. I know that everyone that is charged with something like this says this, but here's his response to the charges

I hope this all gets cleared up and honestly that it doesn't get any more media attention than this. The last thing we need is media attention like this to put our school's name on the radar. good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back!

Thanks for the advice on the titers. I will have to make sure that mine were done that way before I send them in. I am happy to see that Dr. Rogers is getting to tell his side of the story and it sounds like he has some support on campus? The whole thing sounds kind of fishy, that someone would turn in a computer used in that way because it was running slow. I hope that if he did in fact report the incident, that he is cleared of all wrongdoing. Still, I cant imagine being accused of something like this and totally recovering from it, even if you were cleared of charges. Again, just very unfortunate all around. Thanks for the comments Lori.

This whole situation probably won't affect me. If it turns out he's guilty, he is dismissed before I show up. If not, I'd imagine he will have the option to return. But I'd think that this will be resolved by the time I have to take this guy's class (anatomy, right?)

I feel sorry for the students there now though. I know they're doing exams this week, and the MS-II's are getting ready for boards. Hopefully, this isn't too terribly distracting to them.

Still, you read the guy's profile, and you don't exactly think "kiddie porn", but then again, you never know. Hopefully, this will turn out to be horse****.

any news from those waiting to hear back? I'm REALLY mad because I just found out that the school never got my updated transcripts I sent MONTHS ago, containing this past semesters very high GPA. Buffie just emailed me last week to say they received it. I guess it's my fault for not confirming they received it, but I mentioned it in the interview and the interviewers just nodded their heads as if they had already seen it. Just hoping for some good news at this point...

That sux man, sorry. At least you do know that they have seen it recently and maybe after looking at your new transcript, you will get some more attention. Don't be afraid to call and check up on your status though. Remember that the squeaky wheel gets the oil and it may just help show them how much you want it. Good luck.

yup, talked to Buffie last week which is how I found out. I then faxed and emailed the transcripts and confirmed receipt. Also sent them a letter few weeks before all of this. I guess I just have to wait for someone to drop out at this point...

Is anyone looking for a roomate? Or renting out a room in their house still? I'm looking for somewhere near campus to live. Please msg me or send me an e-mail [email protected]. Thanks!

i just spoke to the school today and they said that some letters were sent out on Friday (mine included) anyone heard anything yet? she also mentioned that more were going out soon. wonder if first batch of letters is good or bad....HM??? anyone?

Mine turned out to be a form to be put on the Alternate List (which I sent off today). I don't know what happens at this point really, except waiting.

:scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:

Might as well start on this next application cycle.

same letter here, damn

Looks like I got the alternate list too. :( Not sure yet if I'm going to send in the form, though. I'm going to do some serious thinking about whether I am completely happy with going to NY or if I want to go to go to GA-PCOM bad enough to keep my chance alive there...because I don't want to take someone else's spot on the list.

Good luck Alison, and to the rest of you who haven't received your letters yet! I hope you receive better news than what we've been hearing so far!

I just received the "alternative list" in the mail as well. I wonder how readily this list actually moves? Is there still a good chance this year, or should I consider it a long shot? I really wanted to get into PCOM-GA too. :(

my guess is that the list will move some, but not a whole lot. I know that since the school is in GA, that some people who are holding spots at GA-PCOM would probably drop them if they were to get off a waitlist at MCG or Mercer. You always hear of people who get off the waitlist in the summer before class starts, sometimes even the day before, but certainly those cases are relatively rare. You might want to check the class of 09, 10, and 11 threads to see if anyone posted information about summer movement. Sorry about the not so great news, but stranger things have happened, so it may be worth at try.

When Stanford and Hopkins start pulling people off their wait list, the GA-PCOM wait list could move some. But the reverse is also true.

I too received my "alternate list" letter today. It seems this is a lengthy list. I wonder how many are actually on it. I guess I'd better not hold my breath.

yup me too, alternate list.

I'm getting the impression that not many people opted out at the $2000 deadline, and that the class is very close to full, if not completely full.

PCOM-GA is my #1 choice. If it doesn't happen, I'm not going to wait and go through another cycle.

I guess I'll be sending my deposit to KCUMB. It sucks having to take biochem this summer to meet their prerequisites.

I wouldn't wait another cycle, no matter what. Even if it meant a 100% acceptance to UT-Southwestern. I think you are making the right choice. Hopefully, GA-PCOM works out for you though.

As far as the titers go.....just get revacinated if you cant prove it otherwise. Most often insurance companies will view titers as extra and you can get hit with 300dollar bills (been there) to prove that you had the chicken pox. And if you to to the health dept many vaccines can be obtained even cheaper than paying to go see your doc.

any of you recieved financial aid package-- I don't mean the forms to fillout.

I mean package with complete distribution

They won't give you any money until the first week of school, or thereabouts.

Congratulation on everyone's acceptance to PCOM-Ga. I will be applying (2009) this summer and didn't know if anyone visited the campus prior to interviews. Do they have like an open house or preview week? Would appreciate any help and best of luck to you guys on the waitlist:).

Anyone have an issue with the admissions department not responding at all? I have called them twice (several days apart) and e-mailed them, yet to no avail.

Lucybug: I'm pretty sure they do have something like that. You could probably call them and ask, or try to set up an appt with someone to come check the place out.

Thantis: yeah they are hard to get ahold of, I think.

Anyone know if there is a good place to swim (swimming pool) by the school? I don't believe there is one at the school.
There is a very nice pool center about 8 minutes from your campus...its at the intersection of Collins Hill and Taylor road...where Collins Hill high school is. The center entrance is on Collins Hill.

The only time you probably don't want to be there is at 7 in the morning or 2:10 in the afternoon...because the center shares it's entrance with the school's student parking lot.

How do people with more than one acceptance decide based on financial aid packcage?

I think you get to know what you r getting from the school but actual money may not be seen until school starts.

Finally got in contact (seems I had to use a specific contact). Needless to say, the alternate list is not ranked. Also the percentage that do get in off the waiting list is pegged at (or around) 20%. Good luck to all and God willing we shall get in.

Thanks for posting this information! I've been wondering about the alternate list. It seemed that there are quite a few of us on it. With a class size of around 80 and 20% acceptance on the wait list, perhaps the list isn't so big after all. Good luck to all waiting for the word!

I believe I had heard from quite a few sources that the class count is pegged at 86. I don't think the alternate list is huge though, because you have to remember they are a branch of PCOM (which is in the top echelon of the DO med school world), & with that comes a greater measure of selectivity.

any body received award letter?

I don't know if I've gotten an actual "award letter" yet. I've gotten so much crap in the mail that it all runs together in my mind now. However, my award does appear on nucleus when I log on.

Mine is in nucleus as well... You have to go into "Banner" in the top right corner of the new student section.

I don't think that they are mailing out award packages just yet. I can view my award in Banner as well, however, the financial aid office said that they are still trying to send award packages out to second years right now. Does anyone know what our first semester course line-up is going to look like, what books we will need, etc....?

have you started looking for lender?

When I called, i was told that we have to look for lender ourselves.

Hey Ya'll (yeah it started already) I just signed a lease today at Madison at River Sound. The prices for apartments were amazing, 4.4 miles from school, and fans in every room (big selling point for me hehe), anyways the lady said that there were quite a few students from PCOM already there so I was happy to hear that. and although there are a lot of fee's to start off.. the rent is just a great price compared to the other apartments we looked at.

Just wanted to let my classmates know! hope you guys check it out, i would love to have other people in my class live around me :) :D:D

sweet, just got my "precheck" letter, did you guys work on your medical records and financial aid before you recieved the welcome packet? I have no clue how this is going to work, i want to make the fafsa for PCOM but I'm not sure how it works if i get off the waiting list for my state school. I saw a similar post earlier but no response. I figure i better open up an old wound.

I got my actual award letter in the mail today. It was anticlimactic. I was hoping for a check for $61,000, but its just a letter.

What does your award letter say?

Does it give us more than 40,500-- limit set for STAFFORD loan?

It says pretty much the same thing that it says on my Nucleus page. I'm getting the max stafford loans, and I'm also doing the Grad PLUS loan. The Grad PLUS loan is not showing up on the award letter, but I know I'm getting it.

how do you do PLUS loan?

You can start the process from your bank's website.

Yeah, received my letter, today, regarding Stafford and school scholarship. Also applied and was approved for GradPlus.... but no mention of that, yet, on school's site. Will also apply for private loan to cover living expenses. Keep trying to tell my self it's all worth it.
