Hi, I am currently in undergrad school and thinking about what I should pursue. Does anyone know the difference between osteopath, chiropraactic and orthopedic - such as their roles, the demand for these positions?? Thank you so much!

This is way too vague of a question. You could at least do a search on google before posting. Chiropractors are drugless practitioners, and cannot be compaired to MD/DO in terms of their scope of practice. "Orthopedic" is a surgical specialty, and a very competative at that. Both MD and D.O are eligible to apply after completing all of the educational requirements. Chiropractors may work with some orthopedic patints, but they are not ortho surgeons. I don't know how else should I put it to you? You've got to do your basic search, so at least you know what these professions are dealing with.
Best of luck to you :luck:

hah "sweet jesus" was my initial knee jerk verbal response. I swear, people cant read that bolded thread at the top about searching.

Commander Riker here.

I would say Chiropractics deals with manipulation sans prescriptions. Osteopathy deals with manipulation while able to write prescriptions. Allopathy deals with scientific approach to medicine. Orthopedics is a very sought-after field in allopathy.

I'm trying very hard not to be mean...but it's tempting. How about getting off your freaking a$$ and doing some research and shadowing? Sheesh. Some premeds are lazy beyond measure.

Okay, you should know that there are two degrees, due to historical reasons, that enable a practitioner in the United States to pratice medicine at the level of a physician: MD and DO. Allopathy is associated with the former and osteopathy with the latter. However, in practice, both types of physicians are nearly indistinguishable, since they both practice medicine to a common standard of care. Like MD's, DO's also practice the full scope of medicine in the US, but also learn OMM/OMT, which allows them to diagnose (usually by palpation) and treat certain conditions through manipulation of the musculoskeletal system. It isn't used that frequently by practicing DO's any more, but it is quite popular among patients and in demand; currently there is a wait list for OMT.

Some time ago, medicine shifted focus from a generalist approach to a specialist one, due to the expanding complexity of biomedical science. There are many specialties that a physician might take on. One of these medical specialties is Orthopedic Surgery. Both DO's and MD's can specialize in this medical field. Here is the association from the DO side: http://www.aoao.org/

DC's, or chiropractic "doctors," aren't physicians; they are NOT licensed to practice medicine and are thus completely different from MD/DO's. They have their own theory developed by Palmer. DC's primarly stick to the manipulation of the spine. What they practice is different from the OMT that DO's practice because DO's work with all parts of the body and also with soft tissue; OMT is much more extensive and comprehensive.

Anyway, this is a start. I can't believe I endulged this thread.

Try to watch your language, thank you. I am probably going to P.C.O.M. What's factually wrong with what I stated??

What is the whole "scientific approach" that allopathic medicine uses? Don't we use "science" too? He makes it seem like we are a bunch of quacks handing out massages and medications.

I don't think any amount of research the OP could have done could have brought that synopsis together quite so well. :)

Everyone,
I think we all know this. Riker is a Troll. Bottom line, his profile and posts are completely fake. Why does he do it? Who knows. But he is not serious or sincere. He consistantly takes a position that will cause controversy. Fight the urge. Ignore him.
Kirk out.

Does anyone know the difference between osteopath, chiropraactic and orthopedic...

Yes. There are many, many differences. Osteopath is a nine-letter, four-syllable word, beginning with "O" ending with "H", with "steopat" in the middle. Chiropraactic is a misspelled verison of chiropractic, which is an eleven-letter, four-syllable word, beginning with "C", ending with "C", with "hiropracti" in the middle. Orthopedic is a ten-letter, four-syllable word, beginning with "O", ending with "C", with "rthopedi" in the middle.

While those are the major differences, there are others. For example, each of the words has a different meaning. Similarly, each of them has a different etyology. Also, you cannot use any of the three words in place of another in a particular sentence without changing the meaning of the sentence. It is interesting to note that only one of the words is a true noun. The others are most often used as adjectives. Each word also has a different entry in the dictionary. Two of the words begin with a consonant, while one begins with a vowel.

There are also a number of similarities between the words. Are you also interested in hearing the similarities?

I would imagine that most of your conversations with women are short lived and infrequent, except when the woman is billing by the hour.
